I have this maverick brand pos,it would be awesome if it freaking worked right but it never has.It has two probes one for the meat and one for smoker temp. The problem is the remote sometimes freezes and you think you are at a good temp until you go to the cooker and the fire is almost out! Then the portion that sits at the cooker read hhh or lll for no reason.I just want something good and reliable for monitoring smoker temp and meat temp....
Thanks

My Maverick which is 4+ years old, will sometimes freeze if the batteries are weak. I think the error that you see on the receiver indicates the probe is bad or damaged. Call Maverick and politely complain and they will send you a replacement probe.

I gave up on those things a long time ago after replacing the probes and messing with all the other problems they seem to give you. I use a thermapen now to check the temp when I think its done and have an oven thermometer for the pit temp. Because of the quality of the thrmapen I am considering buying the themo/timer made by thermoworks.

That looks kind of like what I have been looking for. I think I am gonna give it a try since they seem to be reliable. Seems like a great price too. Thanks for your input.

I am going to generally bite my tongue on this thread as most people know my opinions on these things. However, when the web site states: “Affordable replacement probes” as a selling point.

Ahhh Yeah, I think that says it all right there. Mad The probes all look the same no matter what brand you buy.

I have one like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Digital-K-Type-Thermocouple-Thermometer-High-Temp-C-F_W0QQitemZ310139199912QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item4835bca1a8&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50
The probes that come with it are cheap but accurate (mine are anyway) and are ok for monitoring the cooking chamber. I bought an insertion probe from thermoworks to go in the meat. I got the "low cost oven probe" from here:

I like the fact that you have lots of different options for the senors and can toggle back and forth between them. I have seen some as long as 30 ft. so you might even be able to put your meter in the house. Biggest downside I have seen so far is the meter comes from china and shipping takes awhile.

Does the probe wire handle getting pinched by the smoker door well?

I guess it depends on how pinched it gets but I don't let that happen. On my fridge conversion sausage smoker I have a hole drilled that the wires go through and on the weber I run them down through the exhaust. If you are concerned you can order the staniless covered probe from thermoworks but I would still notch the door slightly so it can close properly.
