I was cleaning my smokers today and found this insulation on the fire grate:

The only things that have been in there are Kingsford briquettes and Royal Oak Lump, so I am guessing it came from the Royal Oak. I will continue to use it since it is the most readily available in this area, but I'll try to look a little closer next time.

Thanks for the info. I just bought two bags of RO and started using them yesterday. I'll be looking closer next time I start up the smoker.

I regularly find the following in my RO Lump.

1) Bits of insulation as above
2) Bits of burned paper
3) Pieces of rock
4) Pieces of partially charred wood/bark.

Of the 4 things I find, the partially charred wood bugs me the most. I see the other stuff and throw it out, but I sometimes don't find the charred wood until it is causing smoke to come out of my smoker... I know, I know... smoke out of a smoker?!?!?! who would have though of such a thing. The issue is, it doesn't always smell good and I try to yank it out when I can find it. I won't say that it has affected my cooks, but I can't say that it hasn't either.

i just saw this. i find all kinds of things in RO. its ridiculous that on a regular basis i can find all the same stuff BCD. its part of the reason why i dont use RO anymore. i have switched to http://www.lazzari.com/food_mesquite_lump.html. the 40lb bags cost me $14 at cash and carry.

Cancelled due to the Mrs. not having any of HER stuff ready to sell Rolling Eyes Laughing The Kingfisher came in a little over a month ago, don't plan on taking it to Cowtown as I can easily fit everything on the Rodeo. Still debating on whether or not to sell it.
Yep, we'll be there and don't forget the breakfast offer.

Shocked Oh I get it... It is supposed to help "insulate" the fire, and by carrying the 2 and multiplying by7 and dividing by PI R Square adding the "X" Factor (the rocks) thus providing longer burns... Idea Makes perfect sense, Watson. I must have forgotten to carry the 2. Simple mistake! Laughing

Oregon smoker, I looked at their website and have never heard of any of the stores they sell it at, nor did I see a place to order online. But thanks for the tip, I emailed them to see if they had a distributor in this area.
