|
|
I have been researching for quite a while on buying a Big Green Egg. The only problem I am having is deciding between a large and an XL egg. I have seen these grill extenders for the egg and I am just curious if anybody has any idea how many boston butts can you smoke on the large egg and the xl egg with and without the extenders. My guess is 4 on a large with the extenders but wasnt sure. It looks like you could fit 4 or 5 on an xl without the extender. I wouldn't be smoking this many butts for the most part. But in the event I do, I would like to know the capacity ahead of time.
Also, i have seen the extender that bge sells and I have seen this adjustable rig shown here. http://www.ceramicgrillstore.com/ceramicgrillstore/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=54&Itemid=226 Which one would you reccomend getting.
Any other pros and cons for the large egg vs the xl egg would be appreciated too.
Thank you in advance. |

Go XL if not for butts but for ribs. Before i got my Primo i looked at the XL and the LG and you could not lay ribs flat on the lg. Besides getting the XL and not filling it up is better than getting the LG and running out of room.
One more thing to look at is clearance from the grate to the top. I don't remember which one but one was tight if you were doing a turkey.
Good luck let us know what you get. _________________ Primo Oval XL

I have a large BGE and can cook 3 racks of BBY backs on the main grate. A friend has added the second grate on top and done 6 racks at a time but found a slight temperature variation that caused the upper racks to cook a little faster.
The largest things that I have smoked have been a 13-14 lb turkey and a couple of 10-12 lb Boston Butts. The turkey pretty much took up most of the grill - I don't think that you would be able to fit more than 2 or 3 pork shoulders even with an extender as there just isn't enough room in the dome (of course I have never tried). If you really expect that you will need the capacity to do 4 or more I would go with the XL. Hopefully I will never need to replace mine as it meets 95% of my needs but if I ever do I will step up to the XL. |
