I am having to replace some equipment that I use to sear ribs, cook burgers, steaks, chops, etc. I don't want to spend a bunch right now because I will be buidling an entire new place in just a few years. So is lava rock better than radiant? I don't want wood burning right now because I don't have a large enough hood system to keep the smoke pulled out. I just want a 24" or 36" charbroiler to cook my steaks, burgers and ribs on for now. Any personal experience with a particular brand? Any preference with lava rocks vs. radiant? Thanks folks! _________________ Sam Diggity's BBQ

I would be happy with either, The radiant will have less maintenance, but you may not get as nice of a char smell/taste from it. the rock model will need replacement rocks at least twice a year and is more difficlut to keep clean. The last broiler that I used that had rocks was over 20 years ago, and it also had a blower fan to even out the heat. if I wanted a super hot spot to char the meat heavily, I would turn the fan off.
With either one you could toss a few chips onto it to get some wood smoke flavor, Just do not do that with an infrared unit, the screens or ceramic (depending on which type you get) will usually get mesed up with chips on them. _________________ Just remember that the toes you may step on during your climb to the top will also be attached to the a$$es you'll be forced to kiss on your way back down! |

Thanks Harry I figured you would be one of the first to chime in. I had heard that the lava rocks gave a more flavor with the grease dripping on them but required some more maintenance due to changing out the rocks. I don't mind that. They also seem a bit cheaper than the radiant models. I would love to have a wood show broiler but I can't vent the smoke and I would have to be the one to tend the fire. Maybe later on. I know Cookshack is coming out with a pellet fired broiler that cooks as good as gas but I can't wait on that right now. Maybe later! I have found several used models on ebay and other places. I have a 6' refrigerated deli case I need to trade out if I can. It is only 2 years old. $3800 new. _________________ Sam Diggity's BBQ
