Okay, so I didn't introduce myself before I started posting. Anyhow, I've been getting lots of help so far since I haven't even bought a cooker yet. Everyone here is so happy to help, it's a great forum!

Well, my name is Jim, but my logon is FrayedEnd because I am usually stressed out by my wife and kids. I live in Massachusetts. I am seriously needing to make some good bbq since there is none to be found around here.

I was planning on buying a cooker this week, but I may hold off for a few weeks and see how the budget works out. I was gonna start with an el cheapon Brinkmann for 45 bucks, but I don't want to waste even that small amount if I can get something better in a few weeks. That's about it for now. Thanks to everyone who has answered my posts so far. It's great to see true Southerners willing to help a no experience notherner. BTW, please don't call us Yankees. It doesn't offend us because we are from the North, but because of the baseball team. We hate the Yankees Smile

Smile I don't know why we hate the Yankees so much. Especially since we finally won a World Series in 2004. Before that I guess it would be like if you went to a big BBQ competition every year, and year after year there was one other guy that kept beating you out of the final round. Maybe that one guy has just a bit more money than you, not a lot, but a bit. He is able to afford that one rare piece of hardwood that nobody else can get. Maybe the hardwood had some really rough looking long bark, hangin out, maybe some moss on the end. Then that guy makes it remove all the bark, shave the moss, cleans it up and puts it in the pitt. And once again he steals the competition from you. Well that's kinda how we feel about the Yankees. Mad

I understand.........believe me when I say as a NYer (have only been in VA 8 years).........we were trained to hate Boston and all things Red Sox too..........I was a kid in the 70s.......and my first memories of ball was the 78 season and the Dent homerun.......guess that might be it for me. I think now though the media has played up the rivalry to the point where it is much more explosive........

Oh yeah, the media hype is crazy. Just check out the prices of Red Sox/Yankees tickets at fenway on ebay. Crazy what people will pay to see it.

I was at a Red Sox game last year, I forget who they were playing. But on the way out the fans were chanting "Yankees @UCK!" I'm like, we're not even playing the Yankees. These people are crazy. But it is fun. I know the Yankee players better than any other team so when they play it's always fun to watch.

I went to college for a semester in Worcester (wrecked my knee so had to quit playing and transferred) and it was crazy...and that was only 1990........I have been to a couple of Yankee / Red Sox games.....amazing energy. I admit I miss our chant of 1918............even if we were getting killed that chant alone would just quiet all the sox fans........being in DC I am just psyched the Yans are coming to play the Nats this year.....tickets go on sale tomorrow morning....gonna have to buy at least 2 of the 3 games.

Welcome FrayedEnd from another newbie. I'm not new to BBQ but am new to the site. As someone else has mentioned before on this site. Buy bigger than you think you'll need because you'll grow into in and perhaps eventually out of it once you get good at cranking out some good barbecue. Once the neighbors catch on that you're producing some blue ribbon ribs, briskets or pulled pork they'll start hovering like flies over fresh roadkill. Nothing like having a neighbor or friend show up with an armload or two of beer in exchange for a belly full of good BBQ. Razz
