The competition I'm going to in Knickerbocker, Texas at the end of March is being held out in the middle of a 30 acre field. The organizers aren't supplying any water, so you have tro bring all your own, and I'm not sure what they're doing for toilets. HOWEVER, they're bringing a generator and supplying electricity.
I'm betting that one of the organizers friends owns a Traeger. But that's allright, I can beat it! _________________ Leading the quest to abolish propane from Que'dom...

Based on where you'll be cooking, what type of fuel do you see yourself using. Mostly charcoal with wood for smoke, or are you in an area where you could use straight wood?
Pellet smokers may be the answer for you, but only if you're going to have a constant source of electricity. I'm not sure about Cookshack, but Traegers are useless without juice. |
Well Thomas, as for the DC crowds, they don't really bother me much. I love the big city feel, plus I live about 15 minutes from the city, in the quiet suburban Maryland area.....which is great when I need to "get away from it all." LoL.
As for fuel, I'm leaning more towards the "Lump Charcoal", with added wood for smoke. |

Yep, we are definitely neighbors (so to speak). I live RIGHT across the Wilson Bridge. Actually, I work in your state (Fairfax County). It only takes me 20 minutes to get to work, if the traffic is light. Man, I LOVE the D.C. area! |

I wish it took me 20 minutes..............but I can't really complain.........coming from the boondocks in upstate NY where things like the nearest mall was 45 minutes away ...........I love the DC area too........and now that we have our own baseball team (as a lifelong Yankee fan i just can't like the O's).........I am in heaven......... _________________ Dinger |

Yeah, I can't stand the O's either. Everyone talks about how bad of a guy Steinbrenner is, but personally, I don't have too much of a problem with him. After all, he is playing within the rules of MLB. Actually, he kind of reminds me of Redskins owner Daniel Snyder . O's owner, Peter Angelos......now he is a real jerk.
Have you found any really good BBQ festivals around the D.C. area since you've been here? I found a two small ones in Charles County Maryland, and of course, the big one in downtown D.C. (sponsored by Safeway grocery store). Of course, the Safeway one is a bit comercial. |

I used to live in Crofton. Personally, I prefer to sit on a mountain top, just me and my clan and nobody else, but, to each his own!
If you have issues finding lump in that area, let me know. I know a few places that carry it. I know a butcher that sells restaurant service size bags, which you're not supposed to do. They even have "not for resale" in big letters on the front.
Oh, and I looked at one of the cookers you're getting at the local Walmart last night. I guess it's just a Texas thing, but they had eight of them in stock. Not a bad rig if you know how to take care of it and don't burn it out. Just build the fire to the right size and don't get all pyro on it. I think it's definatley a good deal at $60 _________________ Leading the quest to abolish propane from Que'dom...

I have not, then again until recently i really hadn't looked as i was pretty happy just hanging out in the back yard with my pit. I am actually thinking about going to the big one in DC........I have lived here 8 years and never been........
I was very lucky growing up that my dad was the HS baseball coach and ran our Babe Ruth League......he used to get sponsoirs to pay Yankees (late 70s) to come up to our town in NY to give clinics and attend a banquet as the league fundraiser. I was lucky enough to have guys like Phil Rizzuto and Bucky Dent in my house when I was like 7 and 8 years old........I have great memorabilia and memories.......and the experience definitely made me a lifelong Yankee fan. _________________ Dinger

Aaah....yeah......... I think that I'm going to need the contact number for that place. I found some spots that sell lump, but not happy with the selection. Darn, do I envy those guys who live in Texas (even though it is the home of the HATED Cowboys). |

Sweet!
Eventhough I'm not a Yankees fan, I can respect those kind of stories (as a huge sportsfan). There are quite a few Yanks that I have respected over the years (particularly the ones from my childhood), such as Nettles, Chambliss, Reggie and Willie Randolf.
I collect NFL footballs and have many signatures of my favorite Redskins, including Art Monk (who should be in the Hall of Fame), Darrell Green, Mark Moseley, LaVar Arrington, Doug Williams, Ken Harvey, Brig Owens, etc. Man do I love football...........but I regress. In any event, congrats on the memorabilia. If my house burned down today, all I would like to salvage is my 'Skins memorabilia and my BBQ Grill.....and maybe, just maybe my wife. |

Dude I would be crying if my house burned down..........however, most of my valuable stuff is in a walk in safe at the inlaws........I would lose my collection of old baseball gloves though and that would be tragic. My grandfather was the factory foreman at Denkert for 30 years so I actually only collect their gloves........I remember as a kid (after they had gone out of business) my grandfather always having a glove for me.
Looks like you and I were kids at around the same time as the Yankees you mentioned are the guys I grew up idolizing.......Pinella and Guidry were my idols until Mattingly came along...........
Even as a Cowboy fan I have to agree with you that Monk should be in the Hall of Fame............I cannot imagine how he isn't.......funny thing is that after living here 8 years.........I actually found myself rooting for the skins to make the playoffs even if the cowboys didn't this year......... _________________ Dinger |
