I have looked at them, but have never really considered buying one. I keep thinking that for what you pay for a Guru, I could buy a WSM. And the WSM will run all night unattended on a single load of charcoal.

Well, I am working on a competition/catering smoker that will do 14-16 briskets in a run. If I were just doing backyard Q, you are right, a WSM would be the thing to have! Certainly not anything with a WSM at all! But, it would take at least 7 or 8 WSMs to do the quantities we are looking at.
I was just asking for input from anyone who might have tried a Guru. _________________ Sa-Mokin Competition Barbeque

I hear you. I have a nice sized mobile smoker and will be doing some comps in Oklahoma this year (so I may see you around). I'm just too uptight to trust a dozen briskets or butts to one of those new-fangled things. When I have Fatty loaded down, I stay close by and keep an eye on it.
If you do take the plunge, let us know how it works out. _________________ OkieJay

The Guru is a very well made product that does work great on several different types of cookers. It does work well on the WSM, all the ceramic cookers, most of the Backwoods cookers, and I know that there are several folks using them on the offset cookers but I am not sure of their results.
Fred and Bob are really good people and you could give them a call and probably find out if it would work for your application.
I am not associated with this product in any way and don't even own one as it is just not for me as I get too much enjoyment out of running my cookers just the way they are as to me, this is the fun part of bbq. It ain't supposed to be easy!!! _________________ Old Dave

Hope to meet you OkieJay! Are you coming to Tulsa in July? Believe me, when I have 150-200 pounds of brisket going or doing comp stuff, I am on the smoker(s) like bark on a tree, and love every minute of it. The smoker I am building is a little different in design and I was actually looking for something to just help stablize my heat, if necessary, once it is complete. _________________ Sa-Mokin Competition Barbeque

Thanks for the info Old Dave!
I sent them an email but have not heard back from them yet about my configuration.
I'm not really looking for "easy", just very very consistant! _________________ Sa-Mokin Competition Barbeque
