OK, I'm hooked. Been in the Tulsa, OK area most of my 48 yrs of life.
Grew up cooking on natural gas grills, then LP. Never owned a charcoal grill. Never bought a bag of Kingsford except for the occasional camping trips.
Valentines day, my soon to be wife bought me a Oklahoma Joes horizontal smoker from Academy Sports.
We cut our own oak and pecan from the inlaws place. Start our fires with lump charcoal.
Now completed our 2nd weekend smokin'. First time after seasoning the smoker, stuck with basic chickens and a couple tenderloins. Not bad.
This last weekend, ribs and chickens.....I've never eaten better. Got most of my tips and tricks right here. Great site. Look forward to learning, smoking and hopefully contributing one day.

Welcome to the Ring,

You'll find there are a LOT of Tulsa Ringers here. Next time they have a gathering (are some local watering hole) stop by and say hi.

I like the handle, but it's pretty close to mine Cool

welcome to the 'Ring, smokieokie!

Hey - that pic of your cooker makes me wonder if there's a lot of OEM-building going on.

Mine would look almost identical to yours if you took that picture and flipped it right-to-left, with the only difference being the removable shelf in the front - my shelf is constructed a bit differently.

Aside from that, and the left/right orientation, they're identical. I'm talking to the shape of the handle brackets, the little plaque on the lid, even the metal bar mounts that are on the left side of your cooker under the chimney are identical, only difference being, instead of that bar, mine came with a propane burner & log lighter attachment that slides into those two slots - there are also two removable hanger-hooks under the cook chamber for hanging the propane bottle. Looks like the only other difference I can (barely) see is your firebox appears to have a handle for a (sliding?) damper that I can see sticking out - mine's just the rotary-style damper.

But the similarity is too strong to be coincidental. If yours is also 16" wide and made of 1/4" steel, I'd be willing to bet that either Brinkmann or New Braunfels (or both) are farming out some of their construction, or OEM'ing another or each other's design with just some slight modifications as mentioned here.

Interesting. I'd be curious to know what you paid for yours. I paid $613 including shipping and the lifetime burnout warranty from Bass Pro Shops for mine, which I thought was a hell of a deal at the time, considering I saw the same make/model at other websites for $1000 and up, and that did not include shipping. Feel free to PM me if your willing to share and would rather not discuss it openly.

Thanks for the nice welcome folks. Laughing @ smokinokie, I swear I didn't know, haha.

Smokinfunk,
I'm not sure about the complete OK Joe's smoker history. I know that Horizon smokers in Perry, OK is in the relative mix, (brother). I also noted that New Braunfels image was on the box that mine came in. They call it the wildwest traditions special edition. It's pretty heavy but I'm sure the plate is 3/16. It's very close to my bosses OK Joe's smoker he's had for years and paid $699. I think for the backyard, horizontal beginner, it's without a doubt the best bargain going. I paid $299 + tax. The price dropped dramatically over the last 2 years on this particular model, so I can only assume that once they're gone, they're gone, or will be replaced with a New Braunfels plate instead of the Oklahoma Joes.

Here's the deal

Ok..with the link you posted I also see another difference that I didn't notice in the first photo - which is the ash drawer. Mine doesn't have that. And mine is definitely 1/4" plate, heavy as all-get-out - it's enough to make ya bust a sweat just moving it the 8' that I move it on my patio when I pull it out for a cook. I recall that when it was originally delivered it took the driver, his helper, and me to lift that box off the truck, and we were all grunting.

But it is definitely striking how many exact similarities there are, even considering the differences. Somebody somewhere in the process decided "if it ain't broke don't fix it" and used the same source design to develop more than one model.

Anyway - hope you like yours as much as I do mine!
