Anyone ever use 'em? I searched here and found they're made by Cowboy lump which I don't like.
I looked on nakedwhiz, and there was no review, and I didn't agree with their review of Cowboy. Not to slam on the whiz, but if I remember correctly many of the reviews were from 2002. I have to assume some of those products have changed in 7 years. |

Naked Whiz has only posted reviews on 3 brands of briquets that I know of - Wicked Good Weekend Warrior Blend briquets, OCC Rancher, and Kingsford (in some of his burn time & ash comparison tests).
Smokinfunk reported good results with Duraflame briquets, which are also manufactured by Cowboy, so I expect the Stubb's briquet performance would be similar to the Durafalame briquets.

I haven't seen either Duraflame nor Stubb's briquets in my area. _________________ Let's hope SoEzzy can ditch his heavy hand on photos in 2016!

I just went through 45# of Stubbs. Here are my thoughts...
It lights really, really fast and easy and burns pretty hot for Briquettes.
I have a relatively small ash pan and had to empty it three times burning 23# of Stubbs over a 27 hour smoke in my vertical. Ash also included ash from #10/lbs of wood burned in the ash pan. Not bad in my opinion for Briq's.
I wasn't crazy about the smell of the smoke when first lit, but it imparted absolutely no off tastes on my food and held temperatures consistant throughout cook.
Pics of food here.
I will use it again if I have to without reservation, but I am picking up a pallet of Humphreys 100% natural hardwood briq's charcoal at their main office in Brookeville for @ $10 per 40lb. bag ($0.25/lb)
The Stubbs was @ $9 for a 15lb. bag at Lowes ($.60/lb)

I used them for the first time yesterday, sparked a lot when I was lighting them. Sparked a lot while distributing them around the grill grate. They burn much hotter than K, really they are more like lump than charcoal. I didn't get to really grill with them as I found my hotdogs were bad. _________________ The Demolition Man - Demolition Man BBQ |

I'm on my third bag. Lowes sells it here.
Used it on the grill, in the offset and the WSM.
I like it a lot better then the blue bag Kingsford!

+1 for me. I just opened my first bag last weekend for a first try. Way less ash and better consistancy with the heat than the blue bag Kingsford.
Heading to Lowes on the way home to pickup a few more bags for the next 2 cooks. _________________ If at first you don't succeed...eat the failure, go to the butcher, and try again.

Tried some Stubb's briquettes last night. They light up pretty quickly and the smell/flavor is minimal. Lots of ash. Not nearly has bad as the original K, but too much ash for my liking. Think I'll stick with OCC Rancher (Trader Joe's) when I need to use briquettes.
Edit - One other thing I didn't like about the Stubb's... the ash gets airborne very easily, just like the original K. Every time I added wood chunks or even gently stoked the coals, it sent up a plume of powdery ash. I hate getting ash on my food and/or cooking grates. _________________ Weber Performer
