I've been going to a Chinese buffet for the past 15 years located a bit north of where I live.

Busy corridor on a main street with a "restaurant row".

Good food with reasonable prices.

My wife and I decided to stop by for dinner last night (she had a late appointment, and I'd been working on brakes all day) and grab a quick bite.

The place was totally dark, and the marquee sign out front read:

"Thanks for the support, Happy New Year"

A disappointing shocker to be sure! Shocked

It's Year of the Ox this year. I'm pretty embarrassed because I've still been writing Year of the Rat on all my checks.

You sure it was a "failure" or some other reason?

Agreed, 15 years as quite a long run for that style of eatery, Maybe they just had enough and decided to retire. There are several valid reasons for someone to close a business without it being called a failure.

The first thing that came to my mind was "Chinese". I don't know about other parts of the country, but around my area it is hard to find a Chinese buffet/take-out that actually uses a cash register. All of them have one, but most that I go to just use a calculator on the desk. With all the unreported cash they are undoubtedly keeping, 15 years might have just gotten them to retirement.

Thanks for the replies guys, thought you would find it interesting.

Yupp John, it's a wide spread problem, thanks for sharing the story

The guy that owned the place is my age- read "not quite ready to retire".

He had mentioned to me last time we were in (around Christmas) that with rising food prices, and his lease option being up (and a higher rent being a possibility) he wasn't sure what was in store for his business.

Also, suppliers here do not do net 30 (certainly not 60 or 90 as in days past) anymore and wanted money for goods day of delivery.

My hats off to anyone opening a new business of any type these days, let alone a new raunt...................................

Here's a similar story about a place in my locality...

http://www.theolympian.com/business/story/733843.html

Pay particular attention to this part: unpaid rent in October, November and December last year totaling $42,500 (this is $14,166.67 PER MONTH rent..) Shocked Shocked

And this part: a subsidiary of Sovran will continue to run the restaurant and banquet facility and has retained an existing staff of about 15 employees. (additional expenses on top of rent and other expenses associated with operating a restaurant)

The main restaurant part of this place is SMALL but I have never seen the banquet facility part of it.
