Okay boys, anyone ever heard of or used oen of these things?

It's a company out of Austin, TX, and they have a pretty detailed website, www.smokemaster.com

I'm looking at an off-set barell, measures 22" x 36" cooking chamber, 22" x 20" grilling grate in the firebox. Firebox has a warming plate on top and can handle 22" logs for burning.

It comes with a built in baffle to disperse out the hot spot, and has a 4" clearance under the fire grate so you can drag out the ash without disturbing your fire (two things which made my decision over Lyfe Tyme)

The thing weighs 380lbs (not too heavy for the size) since it only uses 3/16 steel instead of 1/4.

Price tag is $850.

Any opinions? I'd sure appreciate them! And before anybody says it, I KNOW ABOUT BATES PITS! They're too heavy and too expensive.

Have you considered an upright smoker that uses charcoal and wood chunks?

Check out the BDS if you get a chance. Just sold one to a guy in Maryland and he loves it. The jumbo model would even be in your price range, and it will smoke 100+ pounds of butts per load.

Good luck with whatever you choose. Very Happy

Thomas,
Those look like very nice pits. And for the price you mentioned, I am sure you would be happy with one. I have never seen a professonaly made pit from Texas that wasn't a good working rig.

Now, if you are ever in the market for a trailer rig, look me up and we can talk.

Okay, I checked Spicewine out, but I'm a little leery. It looked like a good pit, but nowhere on the page did it say what type of fuel it took.

Is it a charcoal/wood snmoker, gas, electric, pellet?

Thomas,

Spicewine pits are charcoal/wood burners.

Jay (Spicewine) aka spicebag hangs out with the bbq brethren. I'm sure he'd be happy to answer any and all your questions.

Okay, I have a problem. I picked out the Smokemaster Pit I wanted, but now, nobody can get ahold of anyone in this company on the phone.

We're not sure, but the retailer and I suspect that the company has gone out of business. They're located in Austin, and the only phone number listed is an 800 number. I called Austin information and they have no street listing for the company.

They're apparently members of The Smoke Ring, and if anyone in Austin knows about them, I'd appreciate a tip.

It is a nice pit, but a lifetime burnout warranty is no good if you don't answer the phone.

Smokemaster, you've just lost a sale Crying or Very sad

Pretty sure this is the same guy. I pulled it up in Google Local. He's the first listing.

OK, I tried to hold off making any comments on these pits, because I don't like to give negative responses and this may not be the guy I'm thinking of, but here's what I experienced with them last year. First of all, they don't keep any pits in stock, which is actually common for some companies. The guy then tells me that if I want to order a pit, it takes a few weeks to be delivered from Mexico. Now wait a minute... I thought they were built in central Texas. At that point, I left, even though he said he was having one delivered the next day for another customer and I could come by and check out the craftsmanship. Now maybe they used to have someone who builds them nearby, but then they lost that connection and now they order their pits or have their plans built from somewhere else. I don't know, I just didn't feel right after that.

FYI... the shop was located in Northwest Austin on Hwy. 183 before you get to Cedar Park (suburb of Austin). The number to call would connect to the cell phone of the man who ran the shop. It's common for cell phones to change numbers or temporarily be disconnected (miss 1 payment and you're cutoff). If by any chance I am talking about a different distributor, than my apologies for this posting and good luck with whichever choice you make.

If you can't get them on the phone and they do not answer an e-mail, I just wonder how good the customer service is after you buy their smoker.
GET AWAY QUICK. There are MANY smokers out there with companies that will answer the phone.
That's just my opinion and I don't know much about anything.

The absolute best customer service on the market today comes from the pits that i build for myself.
Built for me by me Laughing
I guess if a person buys a pit from a local builder than i`d like to take a walk around the shop and see the pits being built with my own eyes, or at least be able to talk to a real person who gives some resemblance of a caring attitude.
Lots of pits on the market today with way better C.S. In my opinion if i was you Thomas i`d keep looking.
Good luck Laughing

I would call Travis at Diamond Plate if I was in the market for a new pit! He has a number of very happy clients here at the forum, and will build you whatever you want.

Travis
Just curious.... Do you offer or have a backyard line of smokers for sale?
Might be a good opportunity to start. Wink
