Lump is raw wood that is burnt down to charcoal, it is not crushed and formed into briquets. No filler or binder is needed, normally has less ash.

Just saw at my local Wally World they have Royal Oak lump in stock now. I think the price was $5.97 for a 20 lb. bag. _________________ Cold Beer and Smoke.........what could be better. |

The Hickory chunks will be fine depending on the size of your smoker. A smaller fire box needs smaller size wood and larger needs sticks. _________________ Zilla

All the above is great advice.
Also, if you go with the wood, use it dry. Wet wood will leave an arid taste to your BBQ! _________________ BBQMAN

At my Wal-Mart the Royal Oak was in a 10 lb. bag for $5.97. Royal Oak is pretty good and I've used it in the past, but I passed it up to try that new "generic" lump that Wal-Mart gets from Mexico, just to see what it's like. It's in a black bag and costs $2.87 for 8 lbs. Sparks flew everywhere when it was in the chimney and when I dumped it into my smoker it continued another 10-15 minutes. I used the minion method in my modified ECB and the coals suprisingly lasted for 10 hours. I was pretty worried at first because of the sparks. The major problem with this lump is there are many small pieces so it took the whole bag to fill up my charcoal pan. I guess it's OK and will work whenever I'm on budget. I still prefer B & B Oak lump. _________________ "Tag line? We don't need no stinkin' tag line!"

Dude...I am jealous............I used Royal Oak all last summer and fall with the idea I would be able to get it all winter at Walmart.........of course that lasted til XMAS decorations started going up around November 1...........on the positive side....not having the Royal Oak available led me to Wicked Good...........of course as soon as Royal Oak is back in stock i will have to make sure to have a few bags available! _________________ Dinger |

Mr. Dinger,
Royal Oak Lump is as close as your nearest doitbest hardware store. Find it and go in and order SKU# 800279 and you will have it in less than a week. 20 pound bags for about 8-12 bucks depending on where you live. _________________ Old Dave
