I've been cleaning the garage this week and the smoker has been homeless since Thursday. I felt sorry for it and fired up some lump with a piece of apple and did up some hobo eggs. Not really BBQ but there was some wood involved All done in the firebox.
These were a great treat this morning. I don't know if it was a kick of smoke or the fact I ate them standing next to a garbage can in the snow but man those hobo eggs were great!
I'd show some pics of the garage...but its a work in progress |

We grew up knowing those as 'eggs in a nest', I haven't had those in years! Looks like it all came out great, but I would have eaten them inside - everything else just looks Brrrrr! _________________ Let's hope SoEzzy can ditch his heavy hand on photos in 2016!

We used to take a drinking glass and cut a circle out of a piece of buttered bread and fry it up. It was called 'toad-in-the-hole'.

Wow the cooker is making up for lost time. Meatloaf
now breakfast, maybe you should bring it inside and put
up a hood and make a new home for it.
Your breakfast took me back to the 50's dad called them
birds nests, and I was very generous with pepper,
sprinkle cheese, and ketchup. My woman's family
called them one-eyed jacks.

We make it with bacon.
Cut bacon slices in half. Place three 1/2 slices in pan, place bread with a hole in it on the bacon and then add the egg.
Good eats. _________________ Modified Landmann Black Dog 42 Grill & Smoker

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Who would have thought some bread and eggs would get everyone going. Back when I was dating my wife, we would go over to her grandparents and they would always serve these along with chipped beef.
Never knew there are so many names for something so simple. According to my wife this was something that came from the Depression which is probably where the name came from.
I havent had these for years. My son is 16 months old and is into dipping his food into ketchup and anything else liquidy so I made these for him inside the other day and he loved them. I guess this is going to become a regular item in the house now...
but man it was great to be outside cooking in the snow |

Did that a few years back in an old Skillet. I was on the mountain in Alaska hunting Brown Bear. We did Country Fried Moose Steaks with the eggs. The bread was a Sourdough made fresh 3 days before in Seward Alaska from a Starter that was 67 years old.

Now that sounds good! Will have to try that soon. |

I also grew up as those as "eggs in a nest". Really great with Italian bread. _________________ BBQ Newbie.

My dad made them for us growing up, as I did for my boys.
He called them Rin Tin Tin eggs. I loved the fried bread center with lots of grape jelly on it.
