Hi. I will be smoking my first turkey for Thanksgiving. What side dishes do you serve besides the usual mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberries, etc...?

I know im late to this but Im still doing 2 more Turkeys this year maybe you are too.
I did a couple sausages with mine. I pondered the same question for a long time. In the end I decided to keep it simple. Thanksgiving is almost too traditional; in that unless everyone you are cooking for are huge BBQ fans, they'll want the traditional stuff.
You can put ABT's next to smoked Turkey and will be awesome, but if uncle Fred doesnt have mashed taters he'll be upset.
Small victories (This year, smoked Turkey, next year, they'll be expecting the Turkey and the ABT's are the new exciting dish)

We still do all the traditional dishes as well but some of them have seen some changes as well as making some additions.

The baked turkey I had as a kid turned into fried turkey about 20 years ago and has since then turned into smoked fried turkey.

ABT's have worked their way into our traditional Thanksgiving/Christmas meal. Prior to ABT's we took bacon wrapped lil' smokies and deep fried them.

The stuffed mushrooms my sister has made for years have found there way onto the smoker over the last couple of years as well and are now an even bigger hit than they were before..

We still have all the mashed & sweet taters, corn, green bean casserole, dressing, and gravy that have been a part of our holiday meals for 40 years but I'd like to think we've improved on some of traditional foods we've eaten over the years.
