|
|
Ok, I was looking at a smoke pistol to be able to add smoke to my gas grill when cooking (I have a smoker for the LONG slow cooking, but wanted something for the gas grill to add more flavor when I am in a hurry). When I was on their web site ran into a section where someone had used one with a igloo water cooler to make a cold smoker. I have a unit off ebay that's pretty much like the smoke pistol, but uses wood pellets or chips (easier to use without having to buy/order special tubes).
Now my question is do I want to use a igloo or go for a over size ice chest to allow larger cuts or larger quantity at one time. I have also thought of trying to find a older metal ice chest. There is a possibility that the device I bought could put out some heat and a plastic cooler might be expose to some heat, but at the same time some mods would take care of that.
Any thoughts from members would be great! Below is the link of what was done with a smoke pistol and a 5 gallon igloo water cooler....

I don't think it will produce much heat, but I will have a compartment that will hold the ice if using a ice chest or if using water cooler just fill the bottom with ice and the smoke will enter the chamber right above the ice to cool it down before reaching the what ever I am smoking at that time.
Here is the link of what I bought and how it works (He had 2 running with same everything as far as I could tell one for $25.00 and other for $45.00 and yes I jumped on the one for $25.00). I did pay the extra $5.00 for a better plug in pump instead of the battery operated one (not wanting to mess with batteries and hoping for stronger output). Won it on July 30th and arrive on Aug. 2nd.... in 3 days if you count the day the auction ended!
I haven't had time to try it out, but I am leaning to using a ice chest and stand it on its side and making a ice compartment with a hole in it to use the drain plug to drain the water after the ice melts. Hoping to find one that has a hinged door and once built will look like a mini fridge kind of set up with ice compartment on bottom and 2 or 3 racks to hold my smoked items.
