Is anyone interested trading different wood types? I have a virtually unlimited supply of maple and cherry small logs (I don't know which exact species). They are 8-12 inches long and 1-5in in diameter. I cannot find in my area any other type of wood. I am looking for apple, pecan, oak, walnut, pear, orange, etc. etc. etc...... (anything but maple and cherry). I will ship a box to someone in exchange for a box of something else. Maybe this forum can get some kind of "wood club" going. Let me know if anyone is interested. I am in Western PA.

Looks to be good wood too! Craigslist is a goldmine for wood. I'll keep my eye out for you.

I currently have access to way more seasoned water oak (a variety of red oak) than I can cook with. I'd be interested in swapping some water oak cooking wood for some cherry cooking wood. I've never cooked with cherry, but Canadian Bacon recommends it, so I'm interested (his food pics alone are enough to make me want to try it!). I'm just not interested enough to plunk down some $$$ at Cabela's for cherry wood chunks (yet, anyway), while I have plenty of locally available no-cost cooking wood handy.

I think someone started a BBQ sauce club wih a similar approach to members sending sauce to each other, but I never was involved in that while it was active.

Shipping wood around the country can potentially spread envasive insects. Here in Wi we have a problem with the emerald ash borer being spread from Illinois wood. An insect with no natural predator can spread quickly!... Evil or Very Mad USE CAUTION Evil or Very Mad

Good point Dr. S.

The red oak I've gathered doesn't show signs of wood destroying insects (else the wife would make me get rid of it), but I have no idea what hitchikers (eggs) might be in there that would love some wood or other plants from some other area.

No wood swap club for me then. Some day I'll buy a bag of cherry chunks - my Emeril's Delmonico cookbook has a cherry smoked duck recipe I'll need to take for a spin some time.

Well, we may be back in business. All we have to do is keep the wood at 150 degrees F for 3 hours or 120 degrees F for 12 hours to mitigate insect risk for transportation according to this government publication.

http://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/documnts/usda/agib666/aib66606.pdf

I doubt my garage gets to 150 F for 3 hours, but I'll bet it can get to 120 F for a number of hours here in the summer - but probably not 10 to 12 hours consecutively.

I can put a few logs at a time on some foil in my gasser and use a grate surface temp thermomemter, and get the 150 F for 3 hours criteria satisfied I'll bet. I can do this while smoking brisket in my offset tomorrow.

OK, who's up for taking these steps and then making a cooking wood swap?

Don't worry about all that BS...just swap the wood. Wood is wood. Wood travels states all the time without all the hollywood bs worrying about insect travel and the like.

cc141..Where in sw pa are you? I live north of Pittsburgh and have no trouble getting wood of any kind. Just find a local tree trimer and let them know that you are looking for fruit trees or what ever. They will work with you. The less work they have to do to get rid of the limbs and what ever the better.

Those of us who can remember what South Texas was like before the South American fire ants took hold in the 70's, and africanized bees arrived in the 90's, know the potential results firsthand, no Hollywood required.

Yeah ok...People ship wood all over. If you're worried about bugs, they're going to get where they're gonna be without a couple of guys swapping some wood. Drama queens... Laughing Embarassed Laughing

Great idea on Craigslist Bryce, I never thought of that (go figure).

I'd love to swap wood (the maple and cherry) but the freight cost would be EXPENSIVE! Crying or Very sad

Loved the Seinfeld referenece. Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Hey Mike,

I'm serious...in this area there are always folks posting wood for pick-up. It's usually a fallen tree that's been blocked up...or whatever, but it's great. Yeah...right now the freight on wood would (haha...wood would Razz ) be high. However, for folks with smaller offsets or something that use blocks or chunks it may be worth it?

I'll keep my eye out on the list for you, too, Mike...

Take care Buddy (saw your rig by the way...trying to make us all look bad!)
