I just did a quick web search to see how much the base unit costs.
Amazon stopped selling them, and I could not find them listed on the Brinkmann site.
Does anyone know, are they phasing them out?

| I'm definitely going to try this mod, but I'm also thinking of adding another addition inside the firebox. I'm not sure if it will work, but I currently have a gentleman that can cut the material for me. So I figured I would use him while I can. He's pretty darn good at what he does. I will post pics if it works. Thanks for the inspiration alien! |

Thanks for this thread! I have one of these. I always have a fire of about 400 degrees humming. It's always been a shuffling job trying to keep the meat from burning near the fire box....
I'll have to work on this mods and I'm going to make a sliding out grill tray as well.
I was going to build a new smoker.... but I think I'll practice on this existing one first... If I can get this tweeked out then I can upgrade to bigger and better.
Thanks again. |

I appreciate all your effort in making this mod available to us. I used my brinkmann one time four years ago and put it away after my kids told me not to smoke our food again. Well I'm still interested and figured the problem was both me and the pit. I will be headed to the Home Depot to see if I can purchase the better quality steel and get to work. Thanks again, I'll let you know if my next bbq is a hit

Awesome mods and great thread about the SnPs and other similar small inexpensive cookers. I took a slightly different approach to my SnPs that, though somewhat more expensive, produces a great cooker. I simply bought two, made the basic mods, reversed the hinged lid on one, and mounted a lang 84 to them

Of course Alien's mods are cooler, more cost effective and educational. _________________ Virginia Q

| On my Pro I moved the stack to the other end, the temp is pretty even from end to end. I used a single plate with a 90 degree bend on the end and bolted it in with the three bolt already in the cooked to hold it in place. It works a lot better than it did before. |

Hey crowd i have been reading and looking at all of your pics and ideas. Now i have a few Questions From my fire box [17x17x18] a 14 x3 opening how far from the bottom of the cooking chamber { 20 dia x 44 } do i cut my hole. A plate on a 45 degree angle down to tuning plates. So at what height from bottom of chamber do i run my plates and secondly where or at what height do i put bottom grill [at 10 inch half of the diameter?.} And lastly fo i put my exhaust pipe off of the end of the smoker and at what height or do i put it inside of the cooking chamber off of the back. Just asking before i start build.
Thanks Dinger |

Does 8 pages of responses qualify this for a sticky? It gets hard to find, then people don't post to it, then it gets hard to find then people don't....
kitch
PS I still love this thread, Alien. I just got some old drawer bottoms for work that are 12" wide. Great tuning plates, very little modifications.

| On the angled piece of the baffle (not the heat sink), have you reduced the size of the fire box opening at all? I have a baffle template made. but the top flange that bolts to to cooker body extends down over the top of the orginal fire box opening by about an inch. Will it be problematic? Thanks! |

I have a couple 4' x 4' sheets of aluminum in the garage. Would those work for creating the baffle and tuning plates for my SNP?
Thanks for all the info Alien. I have a busy weekend planned now. |

Still referring to this thread. And I'm still directing people here for general info on tuning plates. Great piece, Alien. _________________ I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant. |

WOW- this is a GREAT thread!
I found a SNP pro under the christmas tree this year (no more 12.00 bbq pro water smoker for me!), assembled, cured, cooled, and tossed a fat turkey and a ham on the same day. (they both turned out excellent!) Even being an amateur who knows zilch about an offset, I spotted a potential temp. variation issue before it was even fired up......and sure enough it was a major one! Cant wait to try the mods (mainly the lower baffle)!!!! I plan to raise the firebox grate to get better airflow to the coals as well, and add a couple grate-level thermometers.
I can see this turning into an addiction rather than a hobby, in a hurry.
Thanks Alien AND the rest of you all for some killer help!
P.S.- I also found that sealing the firebox ash removal door INSTANTLY made it a LOT easier to get control of the heat!!!! _________________ brinkmann firebox babysitter, treating the wood like its part of the meal! |

This is a great thread. This is almost exactly what I was thinking of doing to mine.
The only difference is I was going to move the stack to the other end of the cooker and actually put a solid plate across the bottom leaving the far right end open, so the smoke/heat has to travel across the bottom of the grill then come back across the top and exit out the lowered stack on the same end as the fire box.
I was thinking this would make for very even temps and even smoke distribution and would eliminate the hot spot next to the firebox.
Maybe I don't need to move the stack? Too much?
Thanks

This may help...
The same thing happens when you raise the bottom grate too high. Try and stay away from a straight horizontal pull.

| I have lowered it and I think I need to cut back on the coals in the basket as I had it full to the top and level with the opening. Thanks |
