Fowl Butt BBQ is no longer a virgin. We competed in our 1st comp this weekend in Goshen, IN. Talk about a learning experience!! I think we picked up alot of great tips for future competitions.

The field was small this weekend, only 15 teams, but I thought that they did a great job as first time organizer's also. Here are our turn-ins.

Chicken

We finished 4th, and were extremely happy to do so.

Ribs

We screwed up! We worked so hard on presentation that we forgot the most important part, THE FOOD. Mixing "non judge worthy" ribs in the box is just plain ignorant, 13th. Crying or Very sad

Pork

9th. Happy with it considering we had 2 "stubborn" butts and were waaaaay behind schedule with them. Had some bad undone pork we had to throw away. I thought we pulled this off pretty well, all things considered.

Brisket

We changed our technique and did the brisket a little different than what we'd been practicing. DUMB! the first one we sliced tasted like a salt lick AND the texture was HORRIBLE. Brisket #2 was much better, but like whining little b!tches we didn't pay attention (or didn't care) and mixed in some of the crap with the decent. Rolling Eyes 11th.

We learned sooooooooooooooo much on Sat., I can't wait to get at it again in August. I've learned a TON from the mistakes that we made, we still finished higher (9th) than the other 3 first timers, and I was happy with the 4th in chicken(finished higher than the Reserve Grand Champ).

It was a long night...

But definately worth it...

BTW
GC - All Day Smoke
RGC - Shigs-in-Pit

Chicken 1st
All Day Smoke

Ribs 1st
Hoosier Crawdady

Pork 1st
All Day Smoke

Brisket 1st
Shigs-in-Pit

Congrats to all!!

Thanks! Our presentation scores were pretty good in everything, just got to cut down on "rookie" mistakes.

Hey, it all comes with experience, and If I would have did that well at my first contest I would have been on cloud nine.

Congrats on your first comp. We have only done 3 comps and I learn something new every time -- but of course, I also seem to screw something up at each one too. Go figure!

Looks great for your first time out...

Chicken looks very good...

Brisket may do better if you sliced it across the grain...

Congrats guys. Your presentation looks good.

It looks like you sliced the brisket with the grain. Slice it against the grain. That will up your tenderness score a bit.

Hope to see you at madison.

A Big congrats for your first comp! It's gotta be a big relief in getting that first one under your belt.

If we can get our act together, we will be at Madison also.

Smoke On!

Those are some fine lookin' boxes for a first-time comp! I can tell that you guys have a lot of trophies ahead of you. Three words: practice, practice, practice.

Good on ya!

We'll be at the Madison as well. I sent in our check a while ago and they haven't cashed it yet nor have they added our name on the website. Divine Swine will be in the house!

A word to the wise--send in your information as soon as possible. The cutoff this year is 60 teams and they fill up quickly. It may show 32 teams right now--when they add all the teams that have sent in the money, it goes quickly!

We're already paid and in. Good advice for anyone that wants to go but hasn't pulled the trigger yet.

Yea, you get hooked on these things, its like a 30 hour tailgate party. But you do learn alot doing comps, My first comp I just piled the pork in the tray (they did not want green in the box) and did not arange the meat as I should have. And my ribs came out too dry, anf the butts I used were tough.
All in all the first one or two for me I just marked up to learning. My last one I came in 2nd in ribs, all your work will pay off and when you get that first call it feels great.

We had put together a handful of practice boxes over the last couple of months and always found something that we didn't like about them. When we got to Goshen, it really seemed to come together pretty well. That first comp is almost like a free College of 'Q education! The feedback we get from you guys coupled the learning curve of that first comp has been tremendous.
