|
|
Hello Everyone,
I would like to install pistons/struts/window-gas-lift-assists to open and close my cooker door. It is a traditional horizontal barrel offset 16"x30", 16"x16" firebox, 1/4 steel. I know this idea is completely unecessary and probably more trouble than it is worth, but I like the coolness factor of the struts. I've searched the forums but haven't come across any detailed steps for the measurement, strut sizes, etc... I stopped by Advanced Auto and picked up the smallest strut they have but I can barely compress it using all my weight (200lbs) so I don't know if it is even possible because the door isn't heavy enough. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks! |

| Thanks Milt! I had read your thread before posting my thread. I am still unsure how you decided on the position to mount the ends of the piston. I want to mount the piston using bolts and angle iron because I don't have easy access to a welder. So, I need to be sure the door and piston will rotate open and closed easily before I start drilling holes in my new cooker. |

I tried to measure the pistons open and closed lengths
and still had to move them. Try using a bracket with
multiple holes for the piston ends. _________________ Curt

They also need to be kept away from high heat I.E not directly above the firebox. _________________ BBQMAN

In the search box (top left side) type in GAS STRUTS.
This page (1167) has all of the information you will need.
