My wife has agreed to buy me a smoker for my upcoming B-day. I know about the WSM and some of the other Water smokers, but I really want something I can smoke on and use as a charcoal grill for day to day grilling. So, between the Cargriller Smoker Pro and the Brinkmans SNP which would you suggest. It looks like I can get either for around $140.

Thanks

The WSM will work for both. If that is not an option, get a weber kettle. Here in the cooker section, at least half of the threads seem to be about not getting up to temp, not cooking long enough, Or how to do all those mods to the cheap offsets. Coming from someone who has cooked on both the cheap offsets, and a WSM, its no contest. WSM all the way. No offense to all the people with char-grillers and such, but it seems they waste an awful lot of time complaining about them, and not nearly enough time cooking on them. Here are just a few threads on cheap offsets.

My suggestion to you is if you want to play around with a cheaper offset, get a WSM and learn the basics of BBQ first. The WSM is easy to use, and require no modifications. For every person happy with a cheap offset, i will show you a dozen who ditched their the cheapo offset in favor of a WSM or PROBBQ. And for every person who says their sheet metal off set is better then a WSM or ProBBQ, i will show you a liar!

I have a char griller, and if I were doing it over again, I would go WSM.

My chargriller is not bad, it has made me tons of great food. It does however waste a lot of fuel compared to a WSM. I am betting I won't use much more fuel to run the large pit I am building, than I do my chargriller.

I am not unhappy with my chargriller, but for the same money, I could have done better.

If you plan to do more grilling than barbecue, go with the chargriller, as it's got a larger grill surface. If you plan to do more barbecue than grilling, WSM hands down.

Well said! Char-grillers are not bad per se, and lots of folks, myself included, have and do make great food on it. But when it comes to being a good BBQ, it lacks in almost every area.
