Then try out one of these gas conversions for you generator.

The beauty of the Type C conversions is no mods to the original carb other than fitting the new parts.

No gummed up carburetors, nasty fuel spills, gasoline sloshing around in a spare jug, and best of all greatly reduced emissions.

I ordered a new Yamaha for my catering rig, and it will also have dual use for home power outages. The unit will run on propane or natural gas, or even gasoline if absolutely necessary.

I cleaned a lot of Carbs back in my bike wrenching days- it doesn't take long for fuel to go bad in a small float bowl.

Take a look: http://www.propane-generators.com/

Not a bad idea really. But I just use Sta-bil in the gas for all of my yard equip (and gen) that doesen't get a lot of use. Supposed to keep fuel fresh for up to 2 years. If you don't use a tank of fuel in that time...might not need that piece of equip after all... Wink

BUT...I did book mark the site "just incase" Wink

The new inverter style generators are quite (58db at load), lighter, and more fuel efficient than generators of old. They also produce "clean" power that is acceptable to run sensitive electronics.

Motor's in general last longer running on propane/NG than gasoline.

They produce an eight hour run on a 20lb tank at half load.

I bought the Yamaha rated at 3,000 watts with a boost feature that brings it to 3,500 when needed.

The new rig needed power, and as Roxy said they are pricy. BUT, I have to live with it day in and day out, so the investment in the long run is worth it.

The generator was $1947.00 (free shipping) and that price included the extra charge for the hour meter and the factory service manual (if I can repair motorcycles, I figure a simple generator shouldn't be that hard). The conversion kit was another $200.00.

The power here is known to go out during storms, and NG is as reliable as it gets for an uninterupted source of fuel- another big plus in my case.

Plus, unlike Gordon and Chef Hogs rig, my cookers are on the porch and have to be manned from the porch. They never have to leave the AC cab on their rigs.

I just couldn't see putting up with the noise..........................The hot sauce show vendors were a noisy lot last weekend, with the exception of the single vendor running a quite Honda. You could barely hear it running.

Sometime in the near future after my wallet recovers I'll be adding an LCD TV as well so the clean power is also a plus there as well.

Roxy, just another reason why stick burners rule! Cool

Yes Marv Stabil works. You already have LP for your rig that needs power though.

Just figured I'd toss out the experience fellas.

BBQMan,

I was expecting better fuel economy. For most of us a 20lb tank propane = $14 and a 3 gallon tank gas cost $12 and rising. With my Honda 3000iu I get 8 hours min at almost full load.

From what I have seen, gallon for gallon about the same amount of run time Jerk Pit.

Doing the math BTU wise, propane is actually 10% less efficient than gasoline.

I finally got this conversion finished today! Rolling Eyes Laughing

It works really well, and the fumes are much less prevalent than before.

The kit manufacturer recommended breaking the motor in for new equipment with gasoline, so I followed directions for a change! Shocked

I have been looking for a small gen-set that burns diesel.

Seen any of those around??

Of course I would be burning bio-diesel through it, so the exhaust would smell like french fries, or egg rolls if I got the feedstock from the chinese restaurant.

Northern Tool offers a diesel gen-set but it's an off brand that I'm not familiar with. It's also rated at 70 db, and quite was one of my requirements.

I know that Onan offers one as well, but its more of the larger industrial size (Fixed RV, home, business backup).

I also selected an inverter technology gen because of it's lower weight and clean power.

Yamaha and Honda both make great quality power equipment which also factored into my choice. The Yamaha had better features and price for my needs. Neither one was cheap, but should last me a very very long time.
