Am looking for a better unit, just not sure what to waste my money on next. |
This happens to me too. It seems accurate alright, but get 20 feet away or so and it loses the signal. I ended up just leaving it near the smoker. If it goes above temp it starts beeping. That's all I needed...hopefully I'll hear it.
Another issue with it is that if you put the wires between the lid and the mid-section, it pinches the wire, AND seems to leave a gap where smoke escapes. On a windy day that can wreak havoc on your temps. The solution to this is to run the wires through the top vent of the WSM. However, this gets in the way whenever you need to open the lid. Not practical for keeping the probe in the meet. Not bad for monitoring smoker temp though.
You need some sort of thermometer though. If you really want/need one, get one. If not, just, get something to monitor the cooking temp. That's important for timing your cooks. _________________ Charbroil Commercial Series Grill

For you maverick users,
I stumbled across a site last year that had a pictorial on how to mod your antenna on the reciever so you could get better distance out of it without the common range problems.
I do not have a clue which site it was on though.
Maybe a google search will turn it up.
A while back when I still did electronics work, I was a calibrator for Simpson Electric (DOH!!) they are the company that supplied NASA with all their gauges for the early space missions in the Apollo & Gemini programs, and they even did retro work for the movie about apollo 13 with tom Hanks so the instrument panels could be age period accurate.
The make a digital line of meters that can be configured to accept almost any thermocouple, they have a digital readout available in both LED & Backlit LCD. And a user settable trigger mechanism for temp set-point alarms.
A little peek in a grainger catalog should turn these meters up. I am considering using one or two of those for pit thermo's and using the trigger circuit to activate an over-temp alarm of a mini strobe light.
Nothing wirelss is available that I know of, But how cool would digital meters be that could be read from 50-60 feet away in the dark. _________________ Just remember that the toes you may step on during your climb to the top will also be attached to the a$$es you'll be forced to kiss on your way back down! |

I've got the wal-mart brand and other than dropping it twice, once breaking the Antenna lid and the other the side, it works okay. I can sit in my office a good 100' and a whole house worth of wood, drywall et all and get a signal. Now, if you can't get the pay-pal plug in to work, these guys are running a sale on the Maverick and take pay-pal. http://www.kck.com/ I have not purchased anything from them, but was considering it.
Thanks,
