Oh snap, good find. How big is that new tank? I wouldn't mind finding one to do something with. Keep up the good work man, keep us posted.

Hillbilly,
Love the smoker, do you have enough room left on the smoker side to put a hog in there? I was thinking about making a smoker out of an old oil furnace tank but the LP tank seems like a much better idea.
Thanks _________________ Backwoods Competitor |

I am pretty sure that's a 100 gallon. My FIL has one that size in his yard. |

I dont think theres enough room for a hog, i dont plan on doing any whole hogs, so it wasnt considered when i planned the build, the main tank is a 120 gal of which im only using half for smoking and im not sure what size the other tank i just got is. i just went by the propane place and was looking at the bad tanks they had lying around, measured the diameter and just visually looked at the size as it being what i needed and bought it. there would be plenty of room for a hog if i wouldve used the whole tank as a smoker. |

I am planning on going by the gas place this weekend to see what they have. I don't know if I plan on doing a whole hog but it just sounds like something that would be a lot of fun. _________________ Backwoods Competitor |

| I called the propane company in my area looking for a tank that size to do my firebox before I found the compressor tank. They told me they had just shipped off all their old tanks for scrap and would not have any more for a while. I wish they were more like other areas where I could actually get my hands on one. |

I think im gonna lay it all out and take it by a fab shop and let them cut the door open and the intake hole and exhaust hole, then all ill have to do is put it together. |

Got started on the upright part of my build today, filled tank about 3/4 full with water added dish washing soap, rocked the tank back and forth till bubbles started coming out of the holes on top, layed it on its side and cut the door out with a plasma cutter, then cut the 4 inch hole for the exhaust in the bottom of the tank which is gonna be the top , and on the top part of the tank instead of cutting the flange off and the 2 threaded holes from the line fitting, i just cut around the flange and took the whole piece off, which i will replace with a flat piece of steel, this will also be where the intake will be located, still thinking of how i wanna do it, but ive started. Few pics below.
Still need to cut this flange off.
And this is where the intake will be.

Looking good. We had a few posts awhile back about cutting tanks along the seams and the problems with that overlap inside. Much less problems with a plasma cutter but it's hell on a torch.
The challenge with vertical sections is keeping them the same temp as the horizontal. Adding it will probably have a big effect on the way the current section cooks. I'm interested to see what happens. Please keep up the pics. _________________ D. Tillery

yeah i was surprised when i seen the overlap, some of it is cut into and some isnt, ill probably weld up the cut parts and leave it for a door stop/seal put 2 vertical pieces of flatstrap on the inside to make it go all the way around. im hoping by having tuning plates, tuning doors and exhaust dampers that i will have enough control to equal out the temps. Also by laying a piece of plat all the way across the grill section just above the tuning door going into the horizontal smoker it essentially turns it into an offset smoker and by closing the exhaust dampers and opening the vertical exhaust damper it will draw all the heat and smoke through the horizontal up and out the vertical. I still have alot to do to this cooker before its done. im hoping when its all done it works as i planned. |

| Hi All, Don’t know if this would work but was thinking of making a baffle (tunnel) with a gate that would reach across the smoker to the upright. To get the temp and smoke over across the offset to the upright. Has anyone tried this? I was thinking that it would help to equalize the temp between the two. |

Yes, that is common practice amongst builders, when you have a horizontal and vertical combined, what people do is lay different width plates just above the door "tunnel" from the firebox through the horizontal all the way over to the upright tunnel, as you put it, with gaps in the plates being narrow close to the firebox and the gaps getting bigger the closer you get to the upright tunnel, they are called tuning plates because you have to tune the gaps to your cooker, based on the size of the cooking chambers, the amount of draw ect..., this allows even heat and smoke in the horizontal and also acts like a tunnel to direct the heat and smoke to the upright. hope i explained it properly. |

| Oh OK, So it is not a square piece of metal that goes all the way over. The way you are talking about is like Baby Huey’s pictures of his. I see! That makes more sense then what I was thinking. Thanks Hillbilly! |

Tough to be a welder in the summer in the south. You can figure out how to put a fan on you without blowing away your shielding gas. Keep a few wet welding caps in the fridge. _________________ D. Tillery

Ty, here's a few pics of the vertical in place, just need to adjust it a little and weld it up.
