... and come back with my very first charcoal smoker. It's a Brinkman, don't know the model number, but it's green.
And it was discounted, 'cause the box was open and it was the last one. It looks like it can smoke a small turkey, at least!
Since it's been years since I used charcoal, what do I do? How long does a load of coal burn? What kind to use? How do you start it? Who uses chimneys and do they work?
You can see I have a lot of questions. Planning to test it this weekend by smoking a big chicken, since we know how that should come out. _________________ Mmmmm...... bacon |

Probably a ECB. Decent little smoker, especially if you modify it a bit.
I think most folks use a chimney (or propane torch) to start their charcoal. The main thing is to avoid using lighter fluid...that stuff will have your food tasting like kerosene.
If you use the minion method with your charcoal (large pile of unlit coals topped with a handful of lit coals) then you can get a few hours of cook time on that ECB (especially if you add some vent holes in your firebox).
Keep surfing through this forum and you'll pick up on lots of tips.
Chicken is a good idea when just starting out. Smoked sausage is a nice treat too. Before too long, you'll be working on some pulled pork, brisket and ribs. |

The word 'minion' appeals to me.
