Had several requests, so I thought I'd throw out some examples from our first year for discussion and learning purposes.

Some of my year one boxes are pretty fun, not sure they'll end up in public Embarassed

Here's a chicken box, sorry about the fuzzy photo, I now have a better camera (although this photo WAS taken under a tarp in a rainstorm)

Post your scores for appearance. After a couple of days, I'll post the real score and how well (or not so well) it did.

Russ

Chicken looks good to me, again I think too many thighs in the box. Lettuce is sparse and you can see through the box in a couple places.

I'd say a 6.

Where do you get those baby chicken thighs Russ? I look for the smallest ones I can find and by the time I get 6 in the box, I usually don't have room for any sliced white meat.

I'd give this an 8 due to the sparse garnish in the middle and the the darker color on the chick in the lower right.

But this is just based on what I can see in the picture and it may be due to the quality of the picture. In person, this may look a lot better.

Russ, thanks for posting up your 1st year pics. As a 1st-time competitor I'm comparing your boxes to what I did in our first comp this year (I can't believe I had a brain fart and didn't take pictures of my turn-in boxes). My pork didn't look anywhere near as good as this but my other boxes were pretty close in apperance.

Hey, we're talking appearance, not method Cool

Besides, you're kicking my #$@$ this year in chicken, I only have one call in four contests...oh wait, that was a first place...LOL

I'll let some more comments come in and then talk about the box and scores

I would say 8 on this. Maybe a nine, but it is blurry and I dont like my chicken blurry Razz

Yeah, I dont see how you get nine in a box. I trim mine down a lot and I still have trouble getting 6 in there.

Probably a 7. Mainly because of the sparse lettuce and what appears to be gaps with box showing through.

I personally give it a 8 but a kcbs judge would probably say 7

I think this one needs parsley between the thighs. How did you find 9 thighs small enough to fit in that box?

cant grade it. Down here in Texas garnish isn't allowed (except for the occasional $20 hidden under the chicken.)

And the results are....

Appearance 968589

Got 8 out of 33 teams (tastes better than they look)

Comments:

Too many thighs in the box

You can put as many in as you want. I judge one once that had twelve, all stacked on their sides

Wouldn't you like to know. Actually I get them often, I just don't go that small any more. Look for lower weigh packages and they tend to have smaller thighs AND you ought to see me trimming chicken some times Very Happy

Good one. I got a better camera, maybe that's why I got a 5 because of blur

Last thing we do before we close the box is look for that very thing. We filled in gaps and cleaned it up. I just didn't have time for a 2nd photo

We've actually had quite a discussion about it. I don't like the parsley between the thighs, tends to hide some of the chicken and judges hate it when you hide stuff

Oh, I have "sculpted" some of the cutest little thighs you've ever seen Russ. I've just been afraid to use them in a contest. Seems to me like I remember reading something about that in the rules somewhere...? Hummm.... Laughing Thanks for the invite, next time you are trimming some, just let me know I'll come watch. Wink

By the way, what did you do with the rest of those game hens?

Too many thighs, leave enough room for garnish. Try getting all of them reddish in color, not brown, or black. Nice job on cutting up big thighs
into little thighs. Some parsely may help around here in the midwest.
Looks yummy.

CBJ, and some good calls in chicken, but not a first. Just my 2 cents worth.
