I'm going to be in Nags Head during the end of May and was hoping people could reccomend good BBQ in the area. Or any other good eats for that matter.
Thanks! |

| Good luck finding good Q in OBX. High Cotton in Southern Shores is ok, not too impressed with Pigmans in KDH although it has been around for years. Sooey's in Nags Head is awful. The place is dirty and the owner is surly. Jockey's Ribs are on par with Chili's. Do yourself a favor and eat seafood while you are there. |

It's been a bit since I was in Nags, but redray is about right!
I suggest eating at Prime Only at least once. If you plan on making some stuff yourself I think there was a place called The butcher's block that had some pretty good meat selections.
That's about all I can offer as far as Nags goes.
There's plenty of ways to have fun here though. |

Glad High Cotton is ok. The people we are visiting mentioned that one at least they didn't say Sooey's.
Anyone ever go to Currituck BBQ Company in Barco (i think it's in Barco). That one was mentioned to me as well.
Thanks everyone for the input. |

| The Currituck BBQ Co. is located approx. 20-25 miles inland from OBX. You will pass it on the left as you are heading down on hwy 158. I have never eaten there only because of the location, not really convenient during the stay at the beach and I usually don't stop on the way down or leaving. |

Yeah it was mentioned as a place to go if passing it. I would but who knows if the rest of the group in the car will be willing.

If you're itchin for a roadtrip, drive south and grab the Hatteras Ferry to Ocracoke. It's about a 2 hour haul from NH, but the Carolina Classic Burger at Howard's Pub is a nice little gut bomb. _________________ 22.5 Weber Kettle

I love Howard's Pub! Great sports bar, and fantastic service. |

| If you feel like driving a little north of Nags Head you can hit up the Duck Deli. It's on your right hand side as you travel north up route 12. The parking lot is small and the place gets packed during rush hours. I go there at least once during the weeks that we spend down there. If you go, be sure to get some of the smoked wings. |

There are two places down there that I cannot remember the name for the life of me. If I remember right, one was in Avon and the other is further south. They were decent, but nothing special. If I had the resources, I would give some pretty serious thought to opening up a real Q place around Buxton (where the Hatteras Light is located).
I'll definitely agree to going to Howard's. Between the ferry ride and the salt air and the great food and great beer, that's a fantastic place to go. In fact, I was just there about 2 weeks ago. And I have the oyster shooter glass to prove it... |

Okracoke is lovely. If you go in August, I'd recommend you take provisions of your own. When they crank up the A/C in Hatteras and Nags Head hotels, the island is prone to LONG power outages. THe restaurants and the CG station there have generators, but good luck getting into either. That was 25 years ago, but I swear I wouldn't go back without a cooler full of food even today.
We spent the worst family vacation in history there with no A/C, mosquitoes as big as your sister, and nothing to eat but over-ripe bananas and Cheese-its. Folks with small kids were driving around the island in circles in their cars just to get the babies to sleep in a cool environment. THe stench of the seafood rotting in the thawing icehouses was pretty memorable as well.
The meal we had at the Sanitary Fish Market in Morehead City was nothing short of excellent, although that could have been influenced by a three-day diet of over-ripe bananas and Cheese-its. |

I can see how that would've happened back then. That was right about the time I started going there to camp. The biggest problems I've had when there always had to do with storms and the mosquitos - folks sell shirts with a picture of a mosquito that says "State Bird". I haven't been too aware of power outages, though.
Of course, I'd move there in a heartbeat if I could. |

Do not I repeat do not stop at Currituck BBQ It is beyond lame. High Cotton is not bad. Pig Mans is about like everyone else says, kinda weak.
Hit the Rundown Cafe in Kitty Hawk. Just about next door to High Cotton. Caribean place and purty good eats.
Enjoy the beach! |
