Thanks to all who helped out with my tuning plate questions. Here are the results:
I started with me Pitts & Spitts 24 x 48 with upright box. I made 6 tuning plates out of 22 x 8 x ¼ inch steel. I had to weld some wings on the one that covered the heat deflector out of the fire box, and weld a 2 inch vertical on the plate next to the upright..
Here is the instillation of the plates:
All set up and ready to test with 4 temperature probes.
The results:
The pit is a little warmer on the left end but I can live with that considering the rest of the temps. Hooray! I can finally use my upright box. Test cook coming this weekend if the weather is good.
My next project is to make a new sliding upper rack, then if I get real ambitious in the spring, a larger upright box with sliding racks. _________________ Real Barbecue gives you time to get drunk after putting it in the smoker and sober up before taking it out!

Whoa, you must love gadgets. Regular price is $549. For a four probe, remote thermometer? Hope it came with a Guru also and someone to clean the smoker and monitor the fuel and feed you beers.
Guess that's why we're boys, the prices of our toys. |

There’s more to it than that. It’s also a fuzzy logic forced air temperature controller. It will hold the temp in your pit + - 5 degrees. You can raise or lower the temperature of your pit using the remote. You don’t have to play with a damper, just add fuel when needed. When I’m cooking overnight it’s great – I just load up the pit and go to bed. I get 4 – 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep before the pit runs out of fuel and the alarm on the monitor goes off. Plus with a 200 yard + range I can wander around.
And lastly – Yes, I love tech toys!!!!! _________________ Real Barbecue gives you time to get drunk after putting it in the smoker and sober up before taking it out!
