We have all heard about the great bbq in Memphis, but what 3 places would you say are a must to eat at while in Memphis? My wife and I are planning a trip may be in May or April. Only going to be in there for 3 days. (Long Weekend) Thanks for the help. _________________ All you can eat is not a challenge!!!! |

| The Bar-B-Q shop is one that I like quite a bit. Interstate BBQ isn't bad as well. |

| Centrol BBQ for me. Then Interstate. Haven't tried the BBQ Shop yet but that's the next one on my list. |

Ohhh, forgot about central. Well, that looks like a pretty dang good three joint to me! Bar-B-Q shop, Central bbq and Interstate.
Just as a side note, I've never been a big fan of the rendezvous bbq. I just could never see what people saw in it. |

All the above are good choices.
I also agree that Rendezvous is kind of over rated, but does offer neat atmosphere. _________________ Big Tom

If you can go to Memphis between the 15th to the 17th you can come be our booth at Memphis In May World Championship. You can get some of the best BBQ ever from some of the contributors on this web site. See 250 teams competing and partying. Make some new friends and have fun!
Thanks
Mike

If you are going on Saturday be advised that judging is on Saturday and it will be very difficult to get into any booths before late afternoon. All the teams will be doing is nothing but concentrating on the contest. The best time to go is Thursday night or Friday night! Hope this helps
Thanks
Mike

Thursday or Friday are the only times to go. Saturday is just to busy until after 2-3:00. Some teams will be very cordial others will not (private parties etc.) Teams that do not have corporate sponsership often sell s--t which allow you to go in their booth. Often you will see teams from around where you live & they will let you in. This year will be my 23 straight year since 1985. Our team was Grand Champion twice 1985 & 1988 & catagory winner in 1994.
3 generations of family members are now on the team.
Hope this helps,
John

I sure wish my ex-wife would visit Elvis... Besides showing up at a Burger King or two, hasn't he been dead for about 30 years? |

I love Memphis.
There is NO WHERE else where you can WALK to so many excellent BBQ joints.
Don't want to toot my horn too loudly here but over on my site The Weekend Grillers I resently posted a back and forth email discussion I had with Memphis resident and BBQ Lover, Ben Meeks. We discuss many of the best BBQ restaurants in Memphis and what to get at each.
You can read it here if you are interested -- http://www.weekendgrillers.com/memphis-restaurants.html
Hope this helps.
I plan on meeting Ben for some BBQ when I visit Memphis later this Spring. Anyone want to join us? _________________ Mark Hester

Cozy Corner is a must. Rendezvous can be hit-or-miss, but it has been really good the last two times I've gone. Interstate was nearly inedible when I went back in September (the pulled pork was mushy and flavorless, the ribs were incredibly overcooked, and the sides were bad), but I know a couple people who swear by it.
All of which is to say that, other than Cozy Corner, I think there are a number of "famous" spots that may or may not be great the day you go in.
*Oh, as an aside, Pig on Beale has pretty good ribs if you catch them early in the afternoon. By late afternoon, they are usually overcooked and dry. If you are not on Beale, I wouldn't worry about making a special trip there, but if you are craving BBQ as you walk around, Pig is much better than the diner-type place up at the west end of Beale. _________________ Matt

Memphis is one of my favorite places on Earth, too. Let us know when you are going to be there and I might drive over for the day. _________________ Matt

First thing that popped into my mind when I read that was..
"What the hell am I doing in Memphis and not on Beale St???"
They put the shuttle system in memphis because they wanted my money, but didn't think it wise for me to DRIVE to and from Beale St. |
