i am building a stumps clone right now and just picked up my insulation today.
i contacted a local insulation company and they ordered mineral wool insulation for me. it was .42 cents a foot. it come 2X4 bats 4 ft long, 6 to the bundle, so i ordered 2 bundles and it was 45.00. good price i thought.
it is 1400-2000 degree insulation they told me.
first time i have been able to offer someone some advice on a build. i kinda feel like an old pro here. |

The mineral wool is the best choice.
You can get it in different thicknesses to match what your wall/door thicknesses are.
Mail order or online from places like www.mcmaster.com _________________ Big Tom

Extra-High Temperature Sheeting
* Temperature Range: 0° to 1832° F
* Heat Flow Rate (K-factor): 0.83 Btu/hr. x in./sq. ft. @ 800° F
* Density: 8 lbs./cu. ft.
* Color: White
Made of calcium magnesium silica ceramic fiber, this insulation maintains thermal properties even when exposed to water or high humidity.
sounds like this may work for the firebox? It comes in 2" thickness 24" wide by 6' so .... may have to look into this more.

* Temp. Range: Mineral wool, 0° to 1200° F;
* Heat Flow Rate (K-factor): 0.24 Btu/hr. x in./sq. ft. @ 75° F
* Density: 8 lbs./cu. ft.
* Color: Brown to green
Withstands higher temperature than fiberglass. Use indoors or out with metal jacketing. Plain sheets can be cut with a knife. Meets ASTM E84 5/0 for flame and smoke. Wire mesh reinforced sheets withstand extreme shock and vibration. Cut with wire shears.
This semi rigid is much cheaper but not as high a temp. Wonder how hot the firebox gets?
