Leo's, Mr. Tee's, or Mr. Spriggs.... and don't forget to let me know what time we are eating.
Do not... I repeat... DO NOT go to Earl's Rib Palace. _________________ I only believe in two basic food groups... Chili & BBQ

Earl's has decent wings too.... Maybe they should consider changing the name to Earl's Burger & Wings Palace.
Ate at Leo's yesterday.... They may have the best restaurant ribs in Oklahoma. _________________ I only believe in two basic food groups... Chili & BBQ

I can see how their sauce might be one of those love / hate things. I really like their sauce... Not that their meat needs it.
Not sure if that is cinnamon, cloves , or cinnamon and cloves I can taste in it but it's not the kind of flavor that everyone is going to enjoy. _________________ I only believe in two basic food groups... Chili & BBQ

| Leo's sauce is my favorite, I can see it the same way as Cult sees it. Just like it is with me and the same basic sauce that most Central Texas places here have. Some people like it and I don't think it is worth much. |

I think that it is cinnamon and all spice. True tho it doesn't really need it. Gotta love that salad bar too. _________________ www.KosmosQ.com

I've only been to Leo's once, and tend to use sauce only if needed. Think I tried a little bit of sauce, but may have been a bit of spirits involved that day also!! Have they moved back to their old place yet? Hope to make it back there soon(I'm in Seattle area), and maybe they'll have some brisket left to try next time, maybe we'll go before 2PM next time! BOOMER SOONER!! Orange is not a good thing!! |

One of my theories. Ask you friends about any Q place, and the first thing they say "Love the sauce..." "Hate the sauce...."
In my informal surveys, 100% of the first answer is from above. They never talk about the meat first.
It's like Rudy's. Love the concept, the layout everything (Q is average on a good day, but when work is paying for 20 people, it's a good place to take a team) but hate the sauce.
Red Hot and BLue keeps a six pack of sauces handy so you can try the variety.
Me, when the plate comes out, and the Q has never even seen a hint of rub, I don't eat there again. If all they do is throw it in the smoker, they expect you to cover it in sauce.
Don't know of a place locally that uses rub, but then I stopped eating local Q except my 2 times a year.
Last time was lunch with Cult to discuss Q.
We really should for a Q Review team of the local places, ala the KC group that does there.
Should take about a week to hit all the OKC places...LOL
Then we'll publish in the gazette.

Overheard them saying the old location would be open soon... Sounded like they said Labor Day but that can't be right.... I'm thinking she meant to say Memorial Day.
I don't know if the Gazette would let us write anything about BBQ for them Russ... If it's not Earl's they don't want to hear about it.
Still frustrates me that Earl's wins "Best of OKC" every year. _________________ I only believe in two basic food groups... Chili & BBQ

That's not the Gazette's fault, it's the public that votes.
Gotta tell an Earl Story. One of the owners came to my house one night (I didn't know he was coming, one of my daughters brought him) and I just happened to be doing Ribs. Well I'm not intimidated at all, but thought he probably wouldn't like to eat Q if he gets it all day.
Well, just did normal Smokin' Ribs. The entire meal, he eats almost a rack and doesn't say much. Finally the daughter asks,..."well, what do you think"..
His answer "...I didn't know what Barbecue was supposed to taste like until today"
My hats off to anyone who can own a restaurant and make money at it. They've got a good concept, but not great Q.

Sure it's the Gazette's fault... They could easily add a "No Earl's" rule and then Rib Crib could win again. _________________ I only believe in two basic food groups... Chili & BBQ

With places like Leo's and the other few Q places, it's hard to see how the cookie cutter joints could win the "Best" awards..sounds like somebody needs to educate the Gazette!! |

In my mind I expect the meat to be good so the sauce is a differentiating factor to me, if the meat is bad, no amount of good sauce is going to save it. If the meat is bad, I will state that it is bad, just ask me about Bill Miller's around here. I think most people tend to analyze BBQ places this way so that is why the response is like that. After all, if the meat sucks most people will not go back.
I like Rudy's sauce and the ones here seem to be consistently good and their breakfast tacos are great. I work across 183 from one and the one south is pretty close to the house, so we eat there often as the "in-town" BBQ place if we don't have the time or patience to head to The Salt Lick. |
