Posted: Feb 13 2008 Post subject: One of a kind pit design |
|
|
Helo everyone, new to smoke ring. I've been designing a horizontal pit for sometime and now am ready to gather the materials. I hope to have it done by spring of 2009. I will be using used stuff and building it as I get the money so it will take a while.
My design should eliminate any hot spots and it will be able to keep constant temps up to 400 deg or better on a stick burner. It will look simular to the DP smoker. I was going to go crosways to the axle till I seen the DP one so the trailer design is DP the smoker mine and the temp control a friends.
I,m going to build it and work out any bugs then see what happens. |

I'm in the middle of a similar process. Post some sketches, the guys here will give you some great pointers if they see any adjustments that you might want to consider. Oh yeah, and I guess I've been here long enough to say this...."Welcome" |

My smoker will look simular to a DP smoker because the way it sets on the trailer but the main difference is in the heat distribution and temp controll. This is a friends design so I can't give much info on it without his permision but I can say I havn't seen any production smokers like it and I could be wrong but I don't think there is one on this site, it is one of a kind. He said I could use it on my smoker so I will keep you posted.
His is an offset smoker and only burns wood and I would like mine to use charcoal also.
Thanks for the welcome and for any help in advance. |

It's always exciting to see innovation. Can't wait to see the pics. Why do we have to wait until 2009? _________________ D. Tillery

I hope to get started on it in about 3 weaks and will try to post pics as I go. The 2009 date is projected finish date but hope to have it done before then. The problem will be getting the materials together and I am an amature welder, almost no skills, so it will take a while. |

I just had a guy give me a 350 gallon tank for the cooking chamber. I'm going to pick it up tomorow. He says it is in exalent shape.
Where is a good place to get an axle like the ones on the DP smokers?
Thanks _________________ Don't try this at home because I am a trained profesional. |

For cheap...don't know, maybe shop scrap yards, farm auctions etc. To find one wide enough to mount transversely like a DPP, best of luck to you, might have to get one and widen it, not something I'm comfortable doing, but some do it. For me, I'd go to a trailer sales/parts place (have one about 3 miles from my garage) and buy the correct axel.
How long is that 350 gallon tank? Mine is a 150 propane tank, also given to me, and it is 6' long, plus the domes on the ends. Much longer and it might be too wide to pull down the road sideways like a DPP. |

I don't know what size it is exactly, we where looking at one at another place but it had a big dent in it. I told him that I was looking for one and was going to ask the other guy if he would sell it then the guy with me said he had one the same size in perfect shape he woujd give me. The one we seen was aprox 40" deep by 5 or 6 feet long.
As far as axles I have a friend that works at Rual King and he said they have them, (the big discount). _________________ Don't try this at home because I am a trained profesional. |

Looks pretty sweet. How do you plan to make the "roll top" door? Might be hard to make it seal and still be able to roll back? Overall though, I like it a lot, pretty much what I was planning to do in the beginning, but then free materials caused me to modify, then totally redesign my pit! Oh well, it'll still be nice in the end. |
