That is disapointing. I have about 6 or 7 bags left and will need more. This is the best stuff i have cooked on for the price IMO. I hope they choose to distibute somewhere around here. Maybe we could do a group buy on a pallatte if not.

What's the big thing about rancher charcoal?
Is the size big and made with quality materials?

The biggest thing for me about the Rancher was the price... $2.99 for a 20lb bag! It burns very clean. Not as hot as K, but clean and really not that much ash. I've still got about 50bags of it in the shed.

James.

The Rancher charcoal is pure hardwood, like lump, but is shaped like regular briquettes. This allows the best of both worlds for many: the pure wood product w/o any fillers or other chemicals, the uniform size makes for very predictable heat levels and burn times.

The only two negatives for the rancher product are: the limited availabilty and it produces more ash than typical lump charcoal.

This stuff was offered through Home Depot last summer at a rediculous low (subsidized) price of $2.99 per 20 lb. bag. Many that bought it bought by the 60 bag pallet at the introductory price. Now hooked many can't seem to find any more, at any price.

More ash than lump, yes... but not more ash than your typical briquette.

James.

I did not have a good experience with rancher. I bought 5 bags of it to try and ended up just using it for my grill. Not only did it produce way more ash than anything i've ever used before, the ash actually started smothering the fire while I was smoking shoulders and caused me way too much work. Looks like I won't be able to give it another try, though.

That's the first time I've heard that. I've had nothing but good experiences with rancher.

Did they say it was just lump they were selling or are they going to have the briquettes available?

I asked Eric at Original Charcoal if the Costcos in the northeast would be carrying their products, and he said the only person in the world who wouldn't take a meeting with him was the Costco Northeast buyer. Costco's northeast region runs from Virginia/West Virginia northward.

He also said that the Rancher briquettes would only be available in Texas Costcos, while the lump will be sold at 48 midwest Costcos.

Welcome to the forum cmcgill!

If you're in contact again with Eric, ask him to come on "the smoke ring" as I would love to know where I can get some out in Utah and surroundings.

I wonder if this is the Costco , "Kirkland" brand lump
they had last year ???

It was some decent lump, comparable in price
to the 20lb. bags I usually get at GFS.

According to Eric at Original Charcoal, Costco dumped the home Kirkland brand.

I emailed Original and asked for the distributor list, like the one they sent out last year that SoEzzy posted for me. When I get that info I will forward it to get posted. If I get a response I will ask them to join the ring to give us more info.

I can tell you from past experience that their lump is excellent, as well as the Rancher briquette. The lump is really dense, has a good long burn time - wouldn't have to use very much even for a long cook like a big pork butt for instance.

One thing though - don't leave it unattended while starting it up in your charcoal chimney - it gives off HUGE showers of sparks like some out-of-control backyard fireworks display. When I was using the lump, if it had been dry in Charlotte for a while, I'd take the hose and wet down the lawn for about a 20' radius around the chimney, just to be on the safe side.
