Starting up and am at square one. That square being forming the business plan.
If you could, please share any advice or give any tips, share mistakes you've made, or any stories in general for me...PLEASE. |

Have you contacted your local health department to make sure what you want to do is even allowable in your area?
I wouldn't waste any time with anything else until you verify that one major hurdle can be cleared.
Any prior restaurant or food-handling experience? it helps volumes if you can relate to them in a language that they understand.
Business license? Tax ID#?

If you search this site, you will find all you need...but yes as Harry mentioned, talk with your local HD first. _________________ California State Grand Champion-Shake,Rattle & Smoke-July 2007

Thanks. I stopped by a business consulting place that emphasized the business plan and the health dept. as you all have mentioned. After searching for Health info, I found that Texas requires you to have a Tax permit to go through the classes.
I do have prior restaurant and food service experience, and have a general idea of what I'm getting myself into. As with many of you, the passion and love for the industry outweighs everything else.
I will look deeply through the forum and will post questions from there.
Thanks folks. |

See, that's a good question. I just went back and looked at my info. I wet through the City of Dallas site and went to the food establishment permit section.
Am I in the wrong place and/or do I need something else? |

Well even though they are a big pain in the A$$ the Health Department is there to help you, that is where you want to start call and ask them questions directy. They will be listed in your phone book under the County of (your county)
They will tell you exactly what you will need. Including a new start up packet with a check sheet and timeline for approval of each step of the process. I did this not long ago so it is still fresh in my head.
Even though you may feel they are a department of incompetent women sometime they are the ones with the power to grant your license. And believe it or not can trump your local townships building department when it comes down to some of the specifics, so get them on your side to start. Make a good contact there and dont treat them like I feel about them, because you will need to call them randomly to answer questions and you will want them to call you back _________________ Russ

When I met with the ladies (yupp, ladies, not men) that control the events at one of my largest corporate clients one of the questions I had for them was "why are looking for a new vendor"?
The answer was that the last outfit did a poor job, ran out of food, and was rude to them!
Go figure on how those idiots came up with "hey fellas, lets be rude to these incompetent women, what a bunch of old ladies"!!!!
So now I work for them 2-3 times a year, party for 800, thank you very much incompetent condescending a-hole men! _________________ BBQMAN

No offense taken here, to be sure. Just thought it was kinda funny...................
My sister actually has a Phd. (not in a health department related field) and is still incompetent on certain issues at certain times. (but she's still pretty dang smart! )
Heck, we can't all be perfect! _________________ BBQMAN
