My prior subject was stumps vs dp. I now have gotten it down to a lump type cooker. I really like the dp however staying up all night is not the answer if Iam honest with my self and quit dreaming. So Iam down to a stumps or a backwoods. I like the feed system with the stumps. I sure could use some input from users of both. Let the flow of information begin. |

I have nothing bad to say about the older GF stumps insulated models, I have not played with the elite's or platinums yet.
I use my stumps in weather as cold as -25 F. with very little extra fuel usage. and when you add a stoker unit, it does not get anymore set-it & forget-it for a charcoal burning pit.

It is like Ford or Chevy? Red Sox or Yankees? Blondes or Brunettes? Taste Great or Less Filling? Or Tennessee Sippin Whiskey or Bourbon?
I am a Stumps man myself and marvle at the aroma from the clean and pure smoke it produces. An acquaintence of mine won the Jack on a Backwoods. So both are very good. _________________ Memories of past exploits: |

| I live in East Greenbush N.Y. It is now 23 degrees out with snow on the way. I will use a smoker for home use, hunting camp, and camping. So I have to be able to move it around. |

Personally, I own one of the older Stumps GF models. I really like the Stumps however, Stumps and BWS are very similar and both are excellent cookers. If mobility is an issue, the BWS may be your best bet. They are more lightweight than a Stumps. But, depending on how much you want to be able to cook, a Stumps Elite 4 may do the trick for you. _________________ Mike

I have used both, but own and sell Stump's Smokers.
I also built a BWS clone before I knew what clone smokers were.
Both brands have strong owner followings.
Backwoods offers you more choices for models and capacity. They are not built as heavy as the Stump's (if that is of interest to you)
Stump's can provide you with several hours of "hands off" cooking with the use of gravity feed charcoal system and no water pan to refill. Some BWS users also tell of several hours of unattended burn time, and no use of the water pan or auto water systems.
The Stump's Elites need a Guru & fan to operate effectively, the Backwoods don't require a temperature control system, but do benefit from them.
Just a few thoughts.... _________________ Big Tom

You should check out the Spicewine cookers.
They offer a lot of bang for the buck.
I have the Large Spicewine and love it.
Good luck with your choice. |

I'd just about bet that this post here wins the 2008 Huhhmmm "Most Questionalble" (for lack of a better discription) post of the year award. To put any Stump's cooker that far behind any other cooker is pretty rediculous as is the REAL man comment as well. But hey, to each his own and I do know how folks do purely love their chosen cookers. |

Green,
Don't worry I cook next to him at some event with my Stump's GF 222 Cm. And he is a good guy. While he is playing with fire late at night, I am warm in the trailer catching some ZZZZZ.
I like to play with fire, but I like sleep more. |

| I should be having my backwoods delivered today so I will have to let you know what I think. I mostly cook on WSM now so I am looking forward to the additional capacity... |

| I've asked this before and didn't see an answer. With those big water smokers like a Backwoods or Spicewine, what do you do with all the greasy water thats in the water pan when your done cooking? You just can't dump it down your drain can you? |

Most of the contests that I have been to have a grease water dump site and at the house I have stopped using water and mostly go with an empty water pan covered in foil...then just remove the foil and toss...I plan on using sand in my water pan of my new backwoods and just cover it with foil... |

The Backwoods has a removable water pan and I will take it out once I am done cooking and let the grease solidify on top of the water skim it off and throw it out. Then dump the water and clean pan. _________________ If your not smokinit Your Not Cookin

| Thanks for the response's. They sound like a mess to deal with. Do you think most folks are using sand instead of water? Does the product come out differant then with water? It was well below freezing here yesterday and just removing a large water pan would have froze the grease and water. I guess there's always a hammer and chisel could be put in the cooking kit. |
