I was afraid that I would upset a lot of customers that had hired me in the past for those smaller events.... I really didn't see that happen.
I just simple say..."We just can't make any money doing the smaller jobs" and give them the number of another catering company to call that does "intimate" parties.

"I'm glad you enjoyed our food enough to call us back. Unfortunately, we now refuse to work parties as small as yours because they do not fit our effort/profit ratios. Maybe you can call ABC Catering and ask them to waste their time fulfilling your needs for marginal profits. The bright side is, they probably won't gig you for the 18% mandatory gratuity like I did" Very Happy

"However, please tell all of your friends and family who are throwing much larger parties to give us a call. Thanks again!"

Yeah....I can see where that didn't upset anyone....or it could just be that they didn't care?? Shocked

As a customer of many different products, have you EVER been concerned that the company you were buying from(or thinking of buying from) wasn't making enough money off of you?? Why even go there??Confused

I will take your smart a$$ statement and TRY to expain my business practices for those that DO what to learn something for their own business needs.

Thank you for missing the point, as usual. Very Happy

I understand the reason to have a minimum, what I don't understand, is why you would directly tell a customer, especially a previous client, that you "just can't make any money" off of them?

Is that really the best way to explain your policy...to tell them their business "isn't worth it" anymore? Why not just tell them you have a minimum, quote them based on the minimum, and let them decide if they want to go elsewhere?

For anyone wanting to learn something for their own business needs, I would suggest not insulting potential customers, especially if they are previous clients...but that's just me. Wink

Well, I don't just say THAT and hang up the phone Laughing Laughing

I GUESS by posting "that" satement I might of "mis-lead" you into thinking that was ALL I said to the customer....My bad Shocked

I DO have a "conservation" with them and when we are done, they are able to decide to meet my minimum (by inviting more guests), pay the difference if minimum is less...or go elsewhere.

It is THEIR choice but at least I GIVE them a choice by explaining my policy.

WOW Marv, Eddie puts that's extremely well!

Looks like we should e-mail him, and ask permission to use some of that good info! Wink

As you know from my prior post, I did a party of 20 yesterday. Made about $300 for my efforts, and it was a TON of work........................

Now I myself won't turn down a decent day's wage, but that explanation goes a long way toward what it actually takes for a smaller event.

It also doesn't hurt that I was still able to do a larger party, and make money on that one as well.

The client yesterday was my prior dentist (my new insurance isn't accepted at his pratice, it was not personal). It was at a very up-scale residence owned by a local CPA and hot rod enthusiast club president, and will lead to future larger jobs.

Thanks for finding and posting that link! Very Happy
