I certainly thought about it first thing this morning - poured a shot of Bailey's in my coffee in honor. My departed dad once told me that a group of his buddies, who manned a gun turret on the Oklahoma, used to to do that regularly (not sure if it was Bailey's, but it was definitely something that put a bit of steel in your spine). So I kinda just eased into the tradition myself when I was in my late teens. That origin is a little strange, considering he was Army infantry in Europe, and they were obviously Navy in the Pacific. When he was in his forties he attended a reunion in a hotel in New Jersey (I think) and these Navy guys happened to be simultaneously having their own reunion in the same hotel. As you may imagine, old inter-branch rivalries were forgotten in light of the fact that they all fought in the same war, and the two reunions became one big kickass party.
Times like this I really miss my Dad. Greatest man I've ever had the honor to know. _________________ ============================

I thought about it as well - my dad was USAAF, not Navy though, and served in North Africa and Europe. October this year marked 20 years since he passed away.
"The Greatest Generation" - I'm confident mine won't supercede that label. I'm the first to admit I'm a candy-pants and spoiled compared to how they had it, from the Great Depression on. But then again, that was their dream and legacy - for the next generation to have it easier & better than they did. I'm not sure when that will happen again. _________________ Let's hope SoEzzy can ditch his heavy hand on photos in 2016!

I can't say that I saw or heard it mentioned this week and certainly not today. Both of my Grandfathers served in the Pacific and saw heavy combat.
They both never mentioned what happened over there to any of their kids, but both told my brother and I extensively about their service.
I certainly tip my hat to the guys that fought in WW2. Those were some damn hard times. Sometimes I think that in a couple of decades the true knowledge of the sacrifices of the Greatest Generation will disappear. I hope we always remember what happened and why. Forgetting would be a travesty that would doom us to repeat it. |
