I have no idea whether it's legal. It certainly can't be safe, and your food is going to vibrate and roll all around inside your cooker unless you strap them in. In the firebox intake is facing forward, you will be forcing extra air in making it burn hot and kicking up lots of ash. If you have your stack facing forward, then it may reverse the airflow through the cooker. You could build some deflectors around the intake and exhaust though to prevent the wind from affecting these however. I would think your best bet would be to have the pit sideways, and use deflectors to direct the air around the intake and exhaust.
...and don't forget to buckle your meat in to the racks so it doesn't move around when taking corners! _________________ --Chris Baker

I do not know about the legality, but on top of the fact that your food would be all over the place (as mentioned by WoooDoggy) I would be concerned with your coals getting jostled all over the place. I am just not seeing how you could get a happy ending on this one. _________________ Dinger |

I was in the local Hannaford parking lot about 3-4 years ago and smelled some awesome mapley smoke. Looked around for the source, and saw a trailer rig parked a couple of rows away. Smoke pouring out of the stack.
I actually ended up behind it driving up on to the I 295 ramp thinking to myself "yeah, it sure smells good, but is that really a good idea?" _________________ New Braunfels Offset Smoker

My vote is that the guy had NO IDEA what the heck he was doing. The reason I say that is because you said he had "Smoke pouring out of the stack". So he was oversmoking the food to begin with. _________________ --Chris Baker

I'm not sure about the legality either, but I have pulled an active cooker with a whole hog on it (direct, low heat). I cleaned the ash out and added fresh coals (little to no ash) just before we left. I only pulled it about a mile and a half to the stadium, though. And kept it at 25 or 30 mph the whole way. _________________ VEGETARIAN-- Old Indian word for "Poor Hunter"

If some coals fall out and start a fire, I'm sure that could get you in some trouble. I've had guys tell me they drag there smokers around lit, but I wouldn't recommend it. _________________ SMOKERS THAT WORK!!!

It sounds to me like a legal nightmare, I can see ya in court trying to explain why you were sailing down the highway with an active unattended fire going on the back of your rig. Leave earlier and do it right when you get there,
OR
Smoke your stuff first and reheat it when you get there...
DUDE!!! If your in that much of a hurry, take a grill and leave the smoker at home for when you have time. _________________ Chargriller Akorn
