A 7 bone prime rib roast, one bone for every decade!
This is a slightly glib response, but what does your Dad like?
Why not ask him, if there is something he hasn't had in a while, or would really like to try?
Just my $0.02! _________________ Here's a change Robert.

Smoked prime rib would be my first choice as well.
My dad turned 70 a few years ago, and I didn't have this problem. He's a vegetarian now!!!!! _________________ BBQMAN

Sorry to hear that Mike, my sincere condolences to you and your family. I decided to make his favorite meal, meatballs, sausage & braciole in tomato sauce. _________________ The Demolition Man - Demolition Man BBQ |

Thanks Jim for the kind thoughts. That sounds like a delicious meal!! I've always wanted to try braciole from someone that KNOWS how to make it..Every time I go to an Italian restaurant I check to see if they have it..no luck so far!! Enjoy Jim!! |

I'm in the learning stage of braciole, Dad mentioned it last year so this is the 2nd time I've made it. This year I got two thumbs up so I guess I'm getting better at it. The meal was a hit, it could only have been better if I smoked the braciole first, it's on my list of to do's. _________________ The Demolition Man - Demolition Man BBQ |

I just recently joined the forum so my comments might be too late for your Dad's 70th. Maybe, someone else can get something out of them, though.
If the question was directed at what special meal to prepare, you're kinda on your own. My boys know what my favorite meals are, so they don't have a problem in that area. The main thing is just be there for the togetherness. Another word of advice for the younguns. Talk to your folks and find out everything you can about their life. I'm 70 now...my Dad died when I was 53; but sometimes, I still think of questions I wish I had asked while he was still alive.
Now, if your question was directed toward buying him a birthday gift, it gets a little harder. Us old farts usually don't want much; and when we do want something, we just go out and buy it without waiting for a birthday or Christmas. That makes it tougher on the kids to find a gift. When my boys ask me what I want for a special occasion, most likely I will not be able to give them an answer; because I just bought it last week.
If your parents have a hobby or special interest look for something related to that hobby. Last year my boys combined funds and bought me a new laptop computer. The year before that, they bought me a digital controller for the nitrous oxide system on my GTO. NOTE: A nitrous oxide controller is probably not the gift of choice for most 70 year olds.
The boys know I ordered a Traeger Texas last week; and I have casually dropped a couple of hints about a 6'x6' welding blanket and a Foodsaver...who knows what this Christmas might bring? |

Different "flavors" of pellets would be good for ya also..it's hard to buy for parents in their "later years"..I just came out and asked my Dad what he'd like..some really good peanut brittle, and a winter cap to stay warm in Bismarck,ND!! Cabela's and a place in Georgia helped that order!! Maybe a nitrous oxide for his Rascal wheel chair?? |

We just gave the parents on boths sides digital picture frames. It's an electronic LCD screen in a picture frame. I loaded them up with family pictures.
They were thrilled. Mom said it was one of the best gifts she had ever received. She was crying at the time, so I believe her.
We bought 8 inch screen Pandigital units at Costco for around $100 each.

Jib,
You have just solved two major problems for me. There are two people on my list that always give me trouble when selecting their gifts.
Thanks for the idea. Now, you need to get busy and start thinking about what we will get them next year.

KEWL! Yeah, if it's ok with the budget, they are neat gifts, especially since you can load them up with family pictures.
I think I'm going to have to buy one for us too.
Enjoy and have a great holiday!
