Well if the Oly beer is like all the cheap ones I used to drink they started to taste pretty good after the first three or four.
Maybe the same will hold true for your chili. After the first three or four bowls it will start to taste pretty good.

Billy Beer...OUCH!
I remember my beer drinking uncles loathing that stuff. I think it was supposed to be a joke wasn't it. One can only hope.
Does the can actually have a brewery that made it listed? Who in the American brewing industry took credit for that?
I can remember a couple of the local grocery chains out here back in the early '80's that sold generic beer. It was just an all white can that said BEER on the front in huge black letters.
I couldn't imagine that it tasted good. But I'm sure it was a great way to get totally HAMMERED on a $3.00 12 pack.  |

My PaPa (grand dad) use to keep cases of PBR outside at his lake place when I was a youngster. He stopped drinking in my early teens.
As I reached driving age I remember opening a can that didn't provide any feedback, made the mistake to taste it. Took me about ten years longer than my buds to aquire a taste for beer after that. Have never touched another PBR. Summer's were hot down at his place at Lake Sinclair, I think cold beer will stay non skunky. If it sits unrefrigerated,especially in hot weather, it has a short drinkable life. |

It was brewed by Falls City Brewery in Louisville, KY. Falls City was my beer of choice while I attended college in Owensboro. A favorite hangout for college students and employees of the Green River Steel Mill was The Southside BBQ. The time was 1957-1958, a BBQ sandwich with chips was 35 cents, bottled Falls City was a quarter, or a 16 oz draft was 20 cents.
The owner was an "older" guy about 27-28 years old named Jim Wetherington. He had personalized mugs made for his better customers and kept them hanging on a rack behind the bar. I still have mine. I guess I was a pretty good customer; because when I married an Owensboro gal in 1960, he was the best man at my wedding.
Sorry for rambling on, guys. The question just touched a nerve that brought back some remembrances of good times past.  |

Well, Big Tom, there are some Owensboro stories that I woudn't especially like to see published, either.
Seriously, anything I could say about Owensboro would probably be outdated by now. Like most smaller towns of the fifties and sixties, it has grown to the point where most of the small town charm is forever lost. The last time the wife and I were there was in 1997 and I didn't recognize a lot. A few of the old landmarks still existed; but much of the downtown has spread out to the suburban shopping centers.
The Southside BBQ was still there in '97; and we went by and visited with Jim Wetherington. He has since died, so I don't know if the place still exists or not. Other popular BBQ restaurants in the old days were The Moonlight BBQ, Old Hickory BBQ, and Shady Rest BBQ. Shady rest was my least favorite; but a lot of people ate there. They were all family owned so I don't know if the younger generations have kept them going or not. During out later visits, we noticed that a lot of the chain restaurants had discovered Owensboro.
Across the river, in Evansville, IN, was a place called Mac's. They served some of the best slabs I have ever tasted. The wife and I made it a point to go there every time we visited Owensboro. The last time we visited, Mac's had changed to a new location in a fancier, larger building. Unfortunately, it just wasn't the same for us. The menu was the same; but the ribs weren't. They were still packing in the crowds; but the wife and I went home disappointed by the food.
For steaks and a classier dining out, Gabe's was the top choice in Owensboro. I have heard that Gabe also died, so I don't know if his family carried on with the restaurant.
I suppose you already are aware that Owensboro is the hot spot for mutton BBQ. It's funny, I can remember eating a lot of mutton and a lot of pork; but I cannot remember ever having beef BBQ while in Owensboro. I'm sure it's available...I just don't remember it as being popular.
EDIT: Almost forgot...get ready for burgoo...it's Owensboro's answer to Brunswick stew. I actually prefer it over Brunswick stew. Until my wife died in 2003, we used to order it by the case. Moonlight BBQ was having it canned and shipping it. |

Moonlite and Old Hickory are still alive and kicking in Owensboro, KY. I do not know about Southside or Shadyrest BBQ.
Mutton and Burgoo do rule in that area. I really like the burgoo but have not developed a taste for mutton.
Big Tom the Owensboro's contest in September is first class. Held at Diamond Lake Resort just outside of Owenboro. I would highly recommend checking it out.
Are you bringing your stumps dealership with you to Owensboro? I sure hope so. I live in Madisonville which is only 45 minutes away and I would really like to hook up with you and check the new elites out up close.
