I made a pot of chili w/beans this moring and added a cheap can of beer that I had in the garage for cooking purposes.

The problem (hope not) is that the beer was probably 3-4 years old....Guess I don't use it THAT often for cooking huh??

It tasted good (in the chili) but was just wondering if it was ok to actually use. So far all I have done is a "taste test" I have not actually sat down to a big bowl of it...that will be for dinner, it is only 10 AM here now...a while to go.. Laughing

Old beer gets "skunky" Marv. I would imagine that it wouldn't actually be bad to cook with, but I sure wouldn't want to have to drink it! Mad

Marv, if you got beer that old lying around, we need to talk buddy! Shocked Wink

I've got a few cans going on about 3 weeks old now. But they still taste good. Laughing Laughing

Sorry, I can't help with beer older than that as I have never had that problem. Laughing I would think your chili will be fine though as long as you didn't notice a nasty smell when you opened the beer.

Old... beer... can those two words be used in the same sentence?

She was drinking a beer so I assumed she was old enough to...

I guess they can! Very Happy

As much as I hate to admit it... I have a 5 pack of Corona that has been sitting in my fridge for about 5 months now and my brother-in-law drank the one missing bottle during one of my summer BBQ's.

Guess it's about time to throw together some Tex-Mex so I have a really good reason to finally drink it. Wink

I have the fear that the electricity would go off during the middle of the night and I would have to get up and drink all that beer causing me to loose a good night's sleep. Wink

Well I used that 5 year old can of OLYMPIA beer in my chili.....will tell you tomorrow if I lived through the night or not.. Wink Rolling Eyes

Just thought, the brewery has been closed for nearly 5 years (if not already been). Actually it was Miller Brewing that had the brewery last but still did brew a FEW Olys until closing for good in our town....OLYMPIA.

In all seriousness, canned beer will keep longer than bottled. There can be some leakage around the bottle top.

I too don't let mine get more than a day or two old. Laughing

THis is almost like the topic on leftover ABT's. Never had that problem, so I don't have a clue about shelf life. Laughing

That's it - I'm off beer. Switching to Irish Coffees with Jameson's.

Well...at least for the next few minutes.

The biggest problem with old beer is that it totally loses all of it's quality. It can form off flavors and taste like the can it was in. Both the hops and alcohol serve as preservatives, so your old can of OLY is probably just fine for cooking with even tho I wouldn't recommend it to drink. No known pathogens can form or survive in a brewery sealed container. It may smell like an old gym sock or wet cardboard, but it can't kill you.

Get some freshies for cooking and toss that old junk overboard... or drink any way Shocked

I'm with ya there... just skip the coffee and pour the Jameson over ice and be done with it...

James.

I agree about the OLY beer.... funny, when the OLY brewery was up and running back in the 1800's they used the water from the local creek (deschutes). They adopted the slogan "It's the water" and that slogan was on ALL of their merchandise.... The creek is still here but the brewery is long gone.. Shocked
