How long does it normally take you to have Thanksgiving dinner prepared in time for the guests to gobble it down in seconds? We are going to shoot for 3 hours this year!

About 6 hours!

We cook turkey in the oven for a dinner time meal, but I also smoke turkeys for friends and neighbors (free of course) to have something to do in my "spare" time! Laughing

They all pick up their food at noon to prevent interupting our own dinner.

Normally about 6 hours, but this year it'll be 15, as I'm bringing a brisket to someone else's house.

Yup, roughly 6 hours here as well... I do a lot of prep work in the preceding days, but I still have to wait for the turkey to come to temperature. If you did a small bird, only a breast, or some other type of meat (like a rib roast), you could get it done within 3 hours.

excluding the turkey, about an hour for everything.

the turkey goes in fairly early at a low temp. I go deer hunting, come back get cleaned up and get everything else going that bobbie had prepped for me during the day.

And occasionally we have fresh venison tenderloins right out of the deer to go along with the bird. Lets see if I can repeat that this year?

No way! I mean the whole meal in just 3 hours. We are following this planning guide we got from Safeway. For you not familiar with Safeway, they are a grocery food chain. The turkey itself will take 2-hours, the rest of the side dishes you can prepare and have ready while the turkey is cooking. 3 hours later...you eat!

For those who don't believe it, you can check it out for yourself:

http://turkey.safeway.com/recipes.cfm

I really couldn't beleieve it myself, it's actually a really great guide.

I usually do 500 F for 45-60 minutes and then drop to 350 F for the rest of the cook. I also like to stuff my bird with herbs, citrus fruit, and aromatics, so that would probably extend my time some. A 20 pound bird usually takes me about 4-4.5 hours. Afterwards, I need the oven for another 60-90 minutes or so for a few of the sides, and then of course there is carving and serving. All told I still use about 6 hours. It does sound tempting though... Definitely let us know how it turns out!

Ha...of course it would sound tempting to someone who spends 6+ hours cookingl since this whole set of recipes is said to take only 3 hours...That's half the time you spend! Razz
Have you done your recipe for many years? Do you find it stressful spending 6+ hours trying to get everything done in time for guests?

Since I deep fry the turkey.... Some of the sides take longer to cook than the bird does.

3.5 minutes a pound puts a 13 pound bird on the table in 45 minutes plus 20 minutes resting in a bag.... So 65 minutes from oil to table!

That sounds like your making great time! Do always make the same sides along side the fried bird?

Yep.... all the usual stuff... mashed potatoes, bread dressing, candied sweet potatoes, stuffed mushrooms, green bean cassarole.

This year I am adding ABT's to the menu and I am smoking the stuffed mushrooms.

my plan for this year is to get the bird in at about 10:00 A.M. after coming out of the woods (Hopefully with a deer) grab some chow, go back out (if I didn't get a deer in the morning) and continue prepping & cooking at about 2'ish for an aproximate eating time around 4-5:00

So maybe about 6-8 hours total prep time that day, But, I got pies going tonight, One of the birds seasoned, panned & ready to be put in the oven.

All of my prep time for a holiday dinner??? At least 10-12 hours.
I like to do it over several days to free me up more for hunting.

Thanksgiving was great! The 2-hour turkey worked out nicely. It was nice to rely on something to cook so fast while we spent more time on other dishes that needed it. Believe it or not, we went thru 2 turkeys and 2 hams with very little left overs! We actually had to hide some turkey so we could have left overs for ourselves!

Hope everyone's T-day was great as well. Smile
