I found a big smoking pit that is in the storage room of what used to be a bbq joint. It is something else now and the pit is not being used and is just taking up storage space. I talked to the manager of the place and he took my cell # to give to the owner to call me about it. If it's a good one, and cheap enough I may try to get it. I wanted to try to find out a little something about it first though.
Here's what I know. It is a really heavy duty, thick metal chamber and firebox. The hinges on the doors are also big/heavy duty. The cooking chamber looks to be somewhere around 6+ feet and is probably around 30 inches or so but I'm guessing because it is buried up pretty well with other stuff they store there. The cooking chamber and the fire box are both round. The only distinctive thing I could see that might help identify it is an iron eagle ornament (probably 8" wide or more by 10" tall or so... an eagle on a bar with his wings spread and a bell with a short rope/cord hanging beneath the bar the eagle sits on) welded to the top vent pipe. It appears to be a reverse flow because the fire box and top vent pipe is on the same end.
I'd like to research to see what it might have cost new and what it might be worth before I talk to the owner so I can wheel and deal if it's within my price reach. Any help will be greatly appreciated! _________________ --

I went through every link in the Pit Builder thread and found nothing exactly like it. Maybe the owner will call me tomorrow and I can get more info. According to the price he names, it may not matter! _________________ --

Got a few today. The owner said it belongs to the guy he bought the building from. He is going to get in touch with the guy who owns it and let me know if he's interested in selling it. The pics...
The eagle ornament/bell... Eagle over two flags (appear to be rebel/confederate flags) over a bell with cord...
Only thing I saw that might be a name brand... Says SUBURBAN on the fire box door...
Has horse shoes for fire box and cooking chamber door handles...
And an end shot showing the vent on top of the fire box end... and why I can't get to it to see anything more... tons of stuff on and around it.

Looking at those welds, I would say it was custom made and not a specific brand. _________________ Lang Model 84D

Drag that sucker into the open sunlight so we's can see it...
My guess with the Conferderate flag and (dinner) bell is you've got one genuine Southern Smoker... _________________ Hair today, gone tomorrow... |

It's definitely not profesional welding but I like the bell "DINNER IS READY " _________________ You get what you inspect, not what you expect |
