Wanted to post a little recap here.

Patrick(Sa-Mokin') and I left Wed. afternoon and made it as far as Jackson, TN for the night. We grabbed a bite to eat and had a few cold beverages as we tried to figure out what they put in the water there in TN. Wink

We got up and left Jackson about 8:30 and made it to Lynchburg around 11:30. We pulled into the park and dropped off wood and briskets at Roxy's site and did a little walkin' around. We finally hooked up w/ Simcoe County Smokers in the afternoon and hung out w/ them for most of the afternoon. We went up to the hill for dinner(Jack and coke) until we left to go meet the German team in Tullahoma.

Friday was more visiting(read:drinking), helping set up(read:drinking), and international relations(you guessed it). I took a turn at watching temp gauges Fri. night so Roxy could grab a few winks.

Saturday went pretty quick as I split time between Simcoe's site and Hela's site, trying to help where I could. Both teams were fun to watch on Saturday because they are structured differently than my team w/ different jobs and/or meats to cook for each member. Since my team is my wife and I, I cook all the food and she does all the presentations.

I thought both teams did a great job w/ what they cooked. Everything tasted great and they really showed they deserved to be there amongst the top cooks in the world.

I had a great time going out there w/ Patrick and hangin' w/ Roxy and the guys. It was to good to see a bunch of Ringers there. I got to see Old Dave again as he was right down the row from Roxy. I also had the pleasure of meeting L&H out there. I caught up w/ Gordon Friday as well and got to visit for awhile.

All in all it was a great trip. I was a little jealous of these guys for getting in this year, but I really enjoyed having more time to "soak up" being at the Jack without all the worries of cooking.

Sorry, but I didn't get many pics to post. Patrick was the unofficial photograper so hopefully he'll have a few pics to post.

And what a GREAT time it was, without a doubt! Hanging out with everyone and sipping on Mike's Magical Apple Pie (AKA: German Can Openers) Wink Laughing I don't know how many times during the weekend I wished I was cooking... maybe some day.

I'll get some pictures uploaded and post a link to them soon.

Doc:

Simcoe County Smokers placed 63rd out of 80 with our best placing in chicken at 39th. Mid pack in sauce and dessert as well. Very Happy

We had a blast but to be honest I as well as I hoped to going against the best of the best.

Hi there,
Here's Michael from the Hela Grillteam GutGlut. Sorry for my bad english - i think it's getting better each Jack i had. I would like to post my impressions from the Jack 2007 here.

It was a great honor to be the second time at Lynchburg. It's a whole different competition like we do in Europe or Germany. We have Side Dishes and Garnish. We decorate our booth and have table judges.

Last year i made a good friend "Mike" and his wife. Hey! They gave us dry socks. That's a way to make friends. I was very surprised that he would come to Lynchburg again just for the canadian team and to meet my team. We met on Thursday and we only met two days last year - but it was like meeting an old, old friend. He was together with Patrick (now 2 an old, old friend). It was such a pleasure and they were so helpfull to us. Can't remember everything (coz of the Jacks and the Apple Pie - aka Oklahoma Can Opener) but we spent most the three days together.

I think we couldn't have done it without them! They didn't cook or put hands on our meat - but they gave us the support we needed and good tipps and tricks.

Telling the whole story would be too much and so i would only say:

Thank you Mike!
Thank you Patrick!

We will sure meet again next year - if we get an invitation. And of course there's still a chance to see in Belgium. I hope i can give you back some of the good time we had together. That's what bbq is all about for me: Make friends around the world and let's make people happy with fire, food and fun.

We have improved our results from last year and took 19th place in Ribs, 19th place in sauce and 53. place in total. Not too bad.

Thanks for all to Mike and Patrick and of course to this great forum. It helped me a lot to read all the posts and see the pictures. Let's start to make friends all over the world.

I don't know if it's allowed here to post links. Here are my pics: http://www.gutglut.de/index.php?option=com_zoom&Itemid=39&catid=19

Michael...nice to see you made it back from the Bahamas...I hope the storm didn't disrupt any plans. Thanks for posting the pics....and thanks for the great time!

Michael and crew presented me w/ a Hela T-shirt in Lynchburg, so maybe that makes me an official member of Hela Grillteam Gut Glut? I'm not sure what the front says(my German is horrible, especially compared to Michael's English), but the back says "For the Best Barbecue Trainer, Lynchburg 27.10.2007" and it's signed by the team:(seated,L to R), Anke, Olaf, me, Dirk(Cooki the Cook); (standing L to R), Mirko(the Heater), Alex(the Keymaster Cool ), and Michael.

It was a pleasure to spend time w/ them again and hopefully the next time we meet up will be on their turf. Wink

Great to hear the stories and great to hear from BBQr's all around the world....can't think of two nicer guys to get to hang with than Mike and Patrick : good guys and great BBQr's ! I'm lucky enough to have them in my own backyard and appreciate the help from both as I've just started my own attempts at competition BBQ....someday I'd like to visit the Jack and meet up with all the fine folks....hearing the stories reinforces that. Congrats on your placing at the Jack ! Those are great numbers- great job !

Michael,

It was absolutely my pleasure to meet you and all your team. I can't tell you what a great time I had hanging out with you all! I have told every one of my friends about the "Oklahoma Can Opener"... but I remember it a little differently... I think "German Can Opener" is more fitting! You all are great and I certainly hope to see you all again... and thanks Mike for the opprotunity to meet so many GREAT people!

So Michael, I hope you all did not get blown away in the Bahamas...?

Patrick

Mike:

I think you earned big karma points that weekend dude. Me thinks you will be back next year once again, but next time you will be cooking under your banner and not just offering some advice.

You and Patrick are a class act and I am proud to call you guys friends.
