Hey thanks for the pics, I appreciate it. Are those holes about 3x4? Any shots of the firebox into the horizontal?
Again Thank You

That's nice work. How are you dampering those square holes? I can see the handles on earlier pics but I can't figure it out. _________________ D. Tillery

A pic of the firebox before the rest of the insides were added, showing the opening to the horizontal tank.
The firebox with the shelf added. We can grill a steak, or cover it over, and bake in it, or any combination of the two.

I have a piece of plate with the matching holes in it, and spaces slightly larger than the cut-out holes (very important). The plates have slots in them, from which I drilled holes, and welded bolts in place from the back side. Finish it off with stainless steel wing nuts. Mounted rods from the end by bending a tab on the end of the "slider", and have an adjustable vent. The rods are run through longnuts that have been drilled out to slip fit the rod. Bent the rods and mounted wire handles.

You stated in your post that you and your father had researched for 6 months prior to building the unit and then spent 2 months actually building on weekends.
Hats off to you both. It definitely shows that proper planning pays off in the end. Not only was the overall build time reduced substantially by your research, but the fact that you it appears you were able to accomplish this building this rig with very little rework and testing along with the fact that your finished product shows exhibits a fabulous finished cooker in not only appearance but performance too.
Would you mind sharing some of "What" was researched and "How" you derived at the figures you used during your production. Not sure what type of research you did during those 6 months, so any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Some of the figures that I am curious of are:
Vertical box size (understanding that you started with a set size of pipe)
Firebox opening area to main chamber
Chimney size
Chimney length
Chimney placement
intake area
tuning plate design
tuning process
horizontal offset to vertical openings, (number & placement)
And anything else you would be willing to share in regards to research done before the build.
I am currently attempting a build on my own and would like to eliminate time and waste through initial planning so any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks and Congratulations on the outstanding rig you and your dad built. It really is a masterpiece!! _________________ Doug

[quote="dlukas"]You stated in your post that you and your father had researched for 6 months prior to building the unit and then spent 2 months actually building on weekends.
We first looked at the different designs available, obviously. My son told me what he wanted a pit to do, temperature range, smoke evacuation, warming, direct flow vs. reverse flow, etc.. Then I figured what I wanted the pit to do, cook a steak ( or biscuits), have shelves that keep us from falling into the pit, have a work space that can accommodate normal cooking, and handle removed shelves, easy clean out, etc. I drew up three rectangles of the proportions for the firebox, tank and vertical, then played with the formulae in another posting, until I was satisfied that everything would fit and still work. Just make sure you overkill all of the openings where you can. It's easier to close a damper than blow on a fire. |

tuning plate design
tuning process
Tuning plates were made by welding rails across the length of the pit. I used 1/4 x 10 plates cut to fit over the rails side by side. The final plate is a 1/4 x 4 plate. When all are in place, (don't forget to number them) they form a chamber that moves all the heat into the vertical chamber. This allows balancing between the vertical and horizontal. To tune the horizontal, simply pull one of the plates to overlap another, and open gaps between them. WARNING! when you do this, there will be a hot spot if they are opened very far. Be careful not to place meat directly over a large opening. My openings work well on the end close to the firebox and in the middle between shelves. |

Go to www.kck.com and he can hook you up. By the way those are not chrome, they're stainless. You will also have to get some cap nuts to hold them on, unless you do something different than what I did. I bought the cap nuts from McMaster. They just push on the end of the rod. |
