My Dad and I finished our first pit. We have added a charcoal box grill to the front, LP log lighter, as well as a locked storage box since the pics. Holds consistent at 250 from end to end (but can go higher or lower if you want). The horizontal is 6'x3', and the upright is 3'x5'. THe entire pit is 1/2" steel. With the horizontal and upright we have about 55 square feet of cooking space. We can cook about 130 large butts at a time. The lid to the wood basket detaches and hooks to the side of the firebox giving us a large L shaped work station. Very happy for out first pit.

Wow, what a great looking pit. Any chances of getting a peak inside at the cooking areas, the horizontal area as well as the connection of the vertical area? Is this baffled at all? Also notice and area on the vertical that is much lower than the connection to the horinzontal, what is your temperature like in this area? We are in a design stage and looking at something like this exact concept so any help would be much appreciated.

Scott, I will try to post a few more pictures of the inside tommorrow. We have added two baffles in the fire box, just above the vents to force the air further into the fire. There is a baffle above the opening into the horizontal to prevent a hot spot on the grate lowest to the fire box. We also have adjustable tuning plates across the horizontal to regulate temp and to force heat across to the upright.
As for the vertical, its hard to see but look at the side view, there are three handles between the vertical and the horizontal. These are conected to sliders that can be pulled out to create openings between the horizontal the vertical for drawing heat into the vertical or can be used to force the smoke to the higher shelves. With all sliders open and the tunning plates adjusted, we can keep 250 across the entire cooker (horizontal and vertical). If we close the bottom sliders, we can use the bottom of the upright as a heating shelf (150) and still cook uptop at 250. Many combinations to play with. We really dont use the upright too often, plenty of space in the horizontal. Normally we use the vertical as a warming area. |

If you do not mind me asking - about how much was it to put it together minus the labor of fabrication. I am just curious to know as that is a kick ass smoker!! _________________ Jeff Vreeland

The credit goes to my Dad. I said you and I both like to BBQ, lets build a pit and compete. He built one hell of a pit. We researched designs for about six months before the build, looked at everything and decided to go with a traditional offset flow design. My Dad is a manufacturing engineer with a background in welding, so we had an advantage in that in bringing our ideas to reality. He did an awesome job, quality work, extreme attention to detail. It took about 2 months working on the weekends and a few weeknights to complete.
We found the old water boiler at a scrap yard as well as a heavy duty axl. It was in great shape, we sandblasted it, and it was ready to go. The pit is very heavy, entirely 1/4 steel. I think loaded with wood its about 6,000 pounds.
Tuning plates on a large stick burner are a must. We practiced for a few times, and then took it to our first comp and took 1st in sauce and 1st in pork and 4th overall.
I think he'd sell it just so he could build another one. Here are a few more pictures. I will try to find the ones during the construction phase showing the interior tuning plates, baffles, and pass throughs. Thanks for the compliments.
The work table off the side of the firebox is the lid to the wood basket. It removes easily when we set up. The lip on the vertical door is to deflect grease from dripping down the door an onto your feet. The work table in front of the horizontal also extends out for more space.
Shelves pulled, notice the lips on the horizontal doors to keep the pit sealed tight.
Small charcoal grill and storage box on tongue of trailer
Side view, there is a ball drain valve under the vertical to drain grease and moisture.
