For the anything butt we have planned a smoked prime rib so hopefully it won't take up too much of our time. The event organizers "strongly encouraged" us to at least enter that side competition. I had the same thought that it would distract us from the main points categories, but I guess we'll see how it goes.

I'll keep you guys posted. Thanks for all of the encouraging posts!

For anything butt you are usually given the meat at the Cook's Meeting on Friday - so its not something you bring and can have time to prepare. You are usually given 3 or 4 hours to think up what you want to do and prepare it.

That is where all of the fun is Laughing

Check w/ your contest organizer. Most "anything butt" categories around these parts, you must bring your own meat to cook.

My mistake on that on - thanks for pointing that out.

My advice would be to buy 1 spice rub and 1 sauce and use them on all 4 categories....worry about cooking the food and not the flavors.

head Country sauce and smokin guns mild is a good place to start...

Good advice - I have heard that recommended before. We are kind of going that route in that we are using one rub and one sauce (with the same sauce thinned with apple juice for the pork butt), but they are homemade rather than store bought. I have found many commercially available sauces and rubs that I like; however, my buddy that I bbq with will have nothing to do with anything store bought. He says "we'll either win it ourselves or lose it ourselves." We'll see how it goes. We have put a ton of time and money into pre-competition practicing with different rubs, sauces, etc. and have developed some great tasting stuff (IMHO - we'll see if the judges agree).

I dont really get the win on our own lose on our own thing, but I think most folks start out that way. These contests are about cooking perfect food...the difference in everything is the texture of the meat...as long as the flavor isnt crazy the texture is where it is won or lost...

Hey Holly,

The event that the organizers wanted everyone to enter is the ( Maggies Best )peoples tasting tent. They were going to provide two butts for you to cook and then turn in for the public to buy tasting kits. They then vote for thier favorite. Prize money for that part is basd on the number of people who enter, and the entry for taht is only $15.

The Anything but is on Friday night, but the people tasing tent is on Saturday.

We were already signed up for "Maggies Best" and they seemed to "strongly encourage" us to enter the "Anything Butt" competition as well. As of today they have 46 teams.
