Well I've been back at school living in the dorms for a while now and the campus food just isn't cutting it. Man how I wish I had a house and the smoker down here...

Anyone else ever go through these periods of withdrawal?? I can't wait to get home and fire that sucker up.

PS - Newb question alert: Is smoking in the cold/winter weather harder than summer heat? The next chance I get to cook will probably be the winter break so I've gotta have all my facts in line to maximize smoking time! haha

I feel for ya Bronco. But my answer to your question about wintertime smoking, Its no different than summertime for me. Just keep the smoker out of the wind.

Where about are you at Bronco?

Perhaps there is an association or group in your area, and they would allow you to join and go Q with them on the weekends?

The bbq guys and gals I know, are some of the most generous folks around, so put in a bit of effort and you never know what may come out of it.

The other thought I have would be to perhaps find out what the requirements are for forming another society or group at the college...be the founder and organizer and see what student services may help you out with, often funding is available for new groups and societies.

Smoking in upstate N.Y. in the winter is hard, you have to watch where
you put your beer or it will freeze Laughing

I'm at University of Maryland, College Park. Its right outside of DC if you're not familiar with the area. There used to be a restaurant right off campus called JD Roadhouse and they had BBQ and such, but the owner has changed and it is currently the Curry Express....They just don't cook the same way there... haha.

Last year there was an article in our school paper about a local man who smokes and caters, but I can't remember his name for the life of me. Oh well, break will come soon enough.

That's a hilarious name! Back in the day, when I was in college, there was this Indian food place in Campus Corner that had a 4 for 1 happy hour every weekday afternoon from 3-7. If you got drunk enough to eat there(which, unfortunately, was more often than one would care to admit), you stood a real good chance of having some "major intestinal issues" later. We always referred to this as the "curry express". Laughing Laughing

http://stars.umd.edu/view_groups.asp is the list of current student societies at UMD along the top are the links to set up your own like minded group, you appear to only need to find 25 others who want BBQ to be recognized by the University for finances, there are about 35,000 students, so finding 25 who like bbq shouldn't be a problem.

Funnily enough while looking down the list of groups, I noticed that the Minorities in Agriculture Natural Resources and Related Sciences must be a really big group...as they had to put the listing in twice! Rolling Eyes Laughing Rolling Eyes

http://stars.umd.edu/registration/index.asp is the link to the registration process.

Bronco, I work on campus and remember the article you are referring to in The Diamondback. I believe the guy lived back behind Bentley's somewhere and he would do cooks on wednesday's. Keep your eyes open and your nose in the air. JD's was never very good. If you get a chance try Shane's at Rt 1 and Contee road in Laurel, it will at least get you through the shakes Smile

Hey thanks SoEzzy, that could be an idea. I'll try and test the waters and see if many people are interested. That would be cool to get something going for the tailgating at football games.

Redray: I'll have to see if I can get down to try Shane's...anything has to be better than the "Carolina Pulled Pork Sandwich" they had at the diner today haha. Where do you work on campus?

I'm already starting to plan my New Year's eve cook...can't wait for that.

I am 1 1/2 hrs north of you but you are welcome anytime. The smoker is in the driveway and I get home around 4. Let me know what we will be eating or suprise me.

Seriously though if you can't find anything let me know. We are doing the Dover Downs cookoff in a couple of weeks and fell free to stop up and have some Q and Brews.

A Manager with Dining Services was bragging to me about a new "smoker" that DS bought. I asked if anyone in the department knew how to cook BBQ, his response was "How hard can it be?" Shocked I don't know if the Diner uses the cooker, but I am sure that if they do they don't know how to make good Q.

Bronco & Red Ray:

im at UMD too. my friends and i go to shanes all the time. its very good. we all miss JDs more then anyone, especially before JD sold it and a husband and wife ran it for about a year until Curry Express came in.

anyway there is a local guy named C King on the way to shanes, maybe 15 minutes up route 1 towards laurel that is there on weekends when its warmer that cooks ribs and chicken etc in his truck. coolest thing in the world is a truck with a smoker in the back, hands down. hes got some great ribs. check it out

we're gona try Red Hot & Blue in Laurel soon too because i hear good things about that. i dont know much/remember anything about a local guy behind bentley's but if you find anything again, please let me know

thanks

Get a small electric smoker, run a 3" s/s flex tube out some window and do it in your room... Very Happy

I did that one year.

Made some great friends...on the police force and fire department... Shocked

Seriously though, start an on-campus club. For sure there are others feelin' your pain, too...

P.S. Mike Lawry...all I can say of your avitart is...OH MY GOD! Are those two piggies fightin' in her blouse??? Shocked

Cooking in the winter just means a bigger fire in my cooker. No problems here and have cooked in the single digits many times.
