Being a Fireman, I can tell you that a trip to the local firehouse to let them sample the "False Alarm" is always a great thing. The Uh-Oh squad will always phone first before looking into something and determining if it is a real emergency so the sign is a good idea.
As for smoking inside a structure with a true flame....BAD idea, Good for me cause I get to do my job but bad for the homeowner. _________________ Weber 22.5 Kettle and Smokenator w/ Hovergrill

| I have one for y'all. I live in a townhouse. During a recent storm, a nice sized sweetgum tree crashed into my neighbor's house and did a little damage on mine as well. My neighbor caught the worst end of everthing and the tree crushed in the boxing on side of their house. They had a nice blue tarp covering it for a few weeks. I decided to do up a few butts one night. After a few beers and a few hours, I heard some voices outside (at about 2:00 AM). I peeked out and saw the FD. I ran around back and met them at the fence. They were cool about everthing, but told me to bring some by the firehouse next time! The funny thing about the story is that my next door neighbor (the one that called the FD) is married to a Fireman. Apparently, my smoke seeped in through the massive hole in their house. She woke up to an entire house that was thick with smoke and freaked out (as anyone would!). I felt a little bad after that one. |

I've never had the FD show up due to smoker etc., but a few years ago, they were answering a call for an elderly neighbor a few houses down... Once they were done with that call, they did wonder down and hang out for a while and talk BBQ!
And about a year after that, I was cooking on New Year's Eve when a cop car pulls up in front of the house while I'm sitting in a lawn chair in the driveway watching the smoker. Copper said that he lives near by and this is his patrol area... again, he just wanted to see the pit, talk Q and let me know that he keeps an eye out when he sees it parked in the driveway! Actually feed him some ribs that night. Now I got my own little security patrol in the neighborhood! Guess that can't be a bad thing...

| Living here in the Colorado Rockies we make it a practice to call the fire department BEFORE lighting the smoker. When folks see or smell smoke the 911 switchboard lights up. This way the FD knows what I am up to and the tanker planes don't start to taxi at the airstrip! |
