Need some feedback on the Traeger “Digital Thermostat Control”.
Is it worth the extra bucks and does it do a better job for cooking?
Anything else I need to know about these units?
Let me know what you think. Thanks _________________

Just got back from the Traeger Outlet Store in West Linn, OR.
They put in a thermostat that starts at 180' instead of 225', they say they are the only ones doing this. Input? _________________

You've got the older digital thermostat, my son, my son. It works good, just can't get 225. If you adjust the pot on the back to #1, then the mark above 180 will come out about 235-250. At least that's what mine does. _________________ Treager Texas pit

skybob, so, they are pushing old stuff? Now I'm wondering if I really need the 'big tex'. Seems I would not cook for more than six, maybe the 'lil tex' might be better??

I had the LIl Tex for a couple years, loved it. I got a digital thermostat for it. Had to do change the setting on it to keep from having wild temperature swings. 50* swings was common.
I got a great deal on the Texan and so I got it, sold the Lil tex for about what I had in it minus a little wear and tear.
Got another digital thermostat, I'd heard rumors about the new 225 thermostat, but the dealer didn't have any so I got the old one, cranked it to #1 before I installed it.
I like the added room, but the one thing I don't really like about the bigger one is that it doesn't get nearly as hot when trying to grill as the Lil tex. I could run the Lil Tex at 450* easy, but can't break 400* with the Texas for some fool reason. _________________ Treager Texas pit

Skybob, does it matter which thermostat I get? Is one better than the other? Thanks again. _________________

I'd probably try to get the 225 thermostat, but I"ve had 2 of the 180 ones and have had good success with them. I would like to have had the opportunity to get the 225 or actually swap out my 180 for a 225, but that probably won't happen any time soon unless Treager sees this thread and in a moment of weakness sends me a new one , yeah sure that'll happen sometime soon, I bet. _________________ Treager Texas pit

Welcome to the Traeger light! I've got a 075 (texan). It came with the normal 3 position switch and I have since installed the digital (starts at smoke, then 225, ...)
The one time I used the 3-position, I only used the smoke setting, and I wasn't in tune with paying attention to the hood thermo. My buddy has a lil' tex with the 3 position and his smoke runs at 200.
For my setup, smoke runs about 170-180, 225 runs 225-230, and the little bit that I've used the higher temp settings they seem to hold to the dial temp. I can't remember what the digital maxes out at, but I want to say that I have had my Texan up to 450 (I was messing around when I first got it)
I did turn the back panel dial down to "0" (it was at 1 from the factory).
I would run with your 3 position for a while just to verify that you can do everything you want with it. The major benefit to me on the digital is I can see the temp on the red LED from inside my kitchen.
EDIT - I was on the fence about getting the texan vs the lil tex, and I am so glad I got the bigger one! Not sure how it goes for the others around here, but I suddenly became every neighbor's best friend, and it's nice to load that thing up and have multi-family smokes, and/or bigger parties. |

So far briskets and shoulders (10-12 lbs) have been unscrewupable. My M.O. has been put the meat in around 11:00pm-12:00am (right before I go to bed friday night) on smoke, let it run all night, kick it up to to the 225 setting mid morning, internal temps are at 190 by 4:00pm, let it rest for an hour or so, pure bliss around 5:00pm!!!!! |
