How to put this...
I dont want this to come off as an ad for my website or anything like that, but I had a few questions for you guys and thought that it might be worth discussing.
This past week in the rankings Quau passed Lotta Bull for the top spot. Lotta Bull picked up a few points this weekend and might get the top spot back, but I thought that it was odd that I didnt see any mention of the switch up at the top spot. We have gotten plenty of positive comments and feedback and I know folks are visiting the website because of my google analytics, but it doesnt seem to tranlate into chatter...
I guess I am really wondering why...I know I found it extremly interesting that Lotta Bull was knocked off and I even found it neat that Quau was so close when I ran the numbers the first time.
Anyway sorry if this is against the rules, please delete it and accept my apology, but I really was curious. |

I think your concept is good, but the rankings have nothing to do with Jack invites, the AR invitational, or the KCBS TOY standings. Those are hot topics.
You are doing a lot of work, but I'm not sure how important the rankings are to most competitors.
It may take some time before your project means much to to the BBQ community. _________________ Klose 72" Mobile

thanks...I guess I was thinking that given the competitive nature of the BBQ folks that knowing they were they ranked would be something to chat about....
anyway...I know that right now there isnt anything really attached to the rankings but there are a few things in the works, but I still figured that a switch at the top spot might generate some conversation. |

What you are doing with the national rankings is probably very attractive to the handful of teams that can actually be in the running for the top spots.
But for the average BBQ team that might be able to compete in maybe 1 contest per month ( maybe 5-6 per year) it probably doesn't hold much value.
Granted I respect the teams that are out there in a different town every weekend , but most of us guys can't afford to compete on a weekly basis, not to mention being away from family, ect. I personally don't want to make the wonderful world of compettitive BBQ cooking a full time job
Again, I don't want to take away from what you are doing because you are doing good for the bbq sport, but just wanted to give you an opinion from one of the "little guys"
Sincerely
Steve H |

I would like to see the top 1,000 teams to see if we are listed
Just kidding Dawgphan... I like your site and I hope that one day there are incentives associated with it.

We actually have the top 1200 or so in the system and we plan on letting people see all of the rnakings as soon as we can get some free time to add new features...well I guess you could call the addition of the FBA rankings a new feature, we did. What is your team name? Son Seekers? I can look it up for you..
also about teams that cant compete for the top spots. We have had several folks in the top 200 email to express their thanks and tell us that it has motivated them to try and move into the top 100 or into the top 50 or whatever...
Even with just 5-6 contest per year you could easily be ranked in the top 100. |

That would be great. We may not be in the top 1200 because we only cooked 3 contest last year and we have done 6 so far this year. But one day we plan on being the the top 100.

Right now you are right around 600 with nearly 9 points...
so that puts your team in the top 50%...Honestly not bad..The top half of all KCBS and FBA teams that have placed in the top 10 in the last year....there are plenty of teams that have never placed in the top 10...like mine...congrats |

There's probably a few things one of which is you have comments closed (at least they are at the time pf this posting), which automatically stifles community feedback. If you want to encourage chatter, allow people to post comments to your articles. Another is because you just launched and the only thing I've seen about it was the PM you sent me though I'm sure you've posted elsewhere. I don't think word is fully out yet. Submitting some things to the host of Q-Blogs out there will help with this. Also, people are probably trying to absorb the ranking system--how it works and what that means to them. Once it becomes more established and a standard source the buzz will start to build and you will see more involvement. Lastly some people just don't really care as long as they are winning comps or the guys not in first place may disagree with the way you rank things.
I don't know any of this to be fact, but these are all plausible reasons for the cold start. |

I wouldnt exactly call it a cold start. I have been happy with the response thus far. I have not really wanted to be posting about it a ton and everything. Not wanting to whore it out. Anyway...we have been thinking of turning on comments and of course a few other things, but neither of us really have the time to work on anything new. Keeping everything updated is a little more work than I thought it would be. Speaking of which I need to be doing updates right now. thanks for the comments though. |

Dawgphan, I applaud your hard work at putting this together. I have only heard good things from folks and it's just a matter of time before the "chatter" kicks into high gear. As a first year team with only a two comps under our belt, I too would love to know where we stand, if we even make the top 1200 this year... Again ...great job!!!!
Dabaslab, meant to make it over in Lebanon to introduce ourselves and say hello, but the awufull heat kept us in the AC when we didn't have to be outside....sorry but this northern blood just couldn't handle 115* in the shade!!! Plan on doing Lebanon next year as well, hope to say howdy then(usually don't make it that far south, just happen to have family that live there).

Tonto it would have been great to meet a fellow smokeringer in Lebanon.Boy was it HOT. Maybe next year.
Lebanon was BY FAR the toughest competition I have ever seen. It was a who's who of BBQ. It was our first comp this year that we did not get a call in. Our best two meats were 25th ribs and 29th brisket out of 60 teams.
It was a lot of fun. Well run contest. Lots of activities for everyone. We cooked right beside Lotta Bull, Jacks Old South and Smokey Mountain Smokers. It was just a little intimidating .
We'll be better prepared for them next year. Hope to see you there. Better get your entry in early. It fills up fast.

Dabber, tell me about it!!! It was our second comp ever, we walked twice in our first and came in 6th overall out of 44( Taste of Grand Rapids) I figured if I was gonna dive in, I might as well dive in the deep end for the second one in Lebanon ......Like you said, very intimidating. My goal was just not a DAL (DEAD A** lAST) We were very satisfied with 36th overall. Most important we had a good time (except for the heat) Look foward to seeing you next year or sooner!!!

Tonto..36th at Lebanon is pretty darn good if you ask me. We came in 45th I believe. Hopefully one day our comp trail will cross. Good luck in all that you do. _________________ Son Seekers BBQ Team |

Not to go back on topic or anything, but we launched a couple of new features that might interest some of you. We started listing all of the teams ranked and not just the top 200 so now everyone that has scored points is listed and you can browse through the rankings from 1 to 1200 if you want.
Also if your team is ranked you can click on your team name and see what contests we have down for you. If we arent giving you all the points you deserve shoot us an email and we can get it taken care of.
thanks for looking. |
